Hello all! I’m coming here for a bit of advice on my 8-9 yo lionhead rabbit, Lion.

A few days ago (now kicking myself for not counting the days) his left eye was weepy. Not the other one, only that eye. He kept it half-closed or just about fully closed all day and has been for the last few days. It isn’t really weepy anymore, but I can tell it is still a little watery, I’m guessing his companion Pumpkin is keeping him clean. He’s been keeping the eye half-closed most of the time, but he also sometimes opens it fully. Lion is acting totally normal, eating, drinking, pooping, playing, and behavior is all the same as before. No weight loss.

Well, today his eye seems a lot better. All morning I was out there taking care of them he had it open normally, but later in the day I noticed when he was relaxing that he had it, again, half-closed. (I don’t think his other eye was that much closed, but I might’ve startled him a bit and made him open it) It still has the kind of shiny, still-watery look to it, but no weeping. Another fact is that his nose has been a little runny as well, though not excessively. (it has been wet today)

There’s been no discharge or gunk, just pure tears it seems. Eye looks normal, nothing different from the other. At this point I’m unsure if we’ll take him to the vet, as I’m unsure such an old and cranky bun would do well with anything like a flush if he did need it…This is mainly just asking what in the world is going on with my boy and possible solutions, if any, are available.

I’m trying to wrack my brain for anymore information…But I think that’s all. Bunny has a half-closed, slightly weepy eye that I think his companion is keeping under control so no excessive weeping. Nose a little runny as well, but right eye is clear and unaffected. He’s acting perfectly normal, lost no weight, and doesn’t seem to be in pain. (then again, I know how well our little furry friends can hide their pain!)

I looked online and the only thing I can think of that he has is either he scratched it really good somehow, or something that might make the eye go blind. I’m unsure, I need to read up more on these things. His eyesight currently is fine, however, no differences between right and left. No abscesses, either; I’m constantly feeling under his chin, the cheeks, and around the eye.

Sorry for such a long post! I just want to make sure I have all the details in there. Thanks to any responders!

It could be his teeth on the weepy eye-side. Teeth should always be suspected with one weepy eye. Does he eat hay?

I would also like to add an extra post: I just remember the date Lion’s weepy eye started. It was the evening I was going to a book signing, so I remembered aha. His eye started weeping on September 27th.

It’s possible he has a molar root that’s growing into his jaw, putting pressure behind his eye. Severe cases lead to actual puncture of the eye. Potentially painful, as well as damaging. Is a vet appointment able to be arranged soon? This reasoning could explain why there are no outward symptoms.

@bam You know, I have no idea why I didn’t quite think about this yet. I haven’t been reading up on stuff really, which is very bad of me…And yes, he does. I make sure he has unlimited timothy hay.

@Wick Ooh, like I said above, I’ve been a little ignorant in reading up on things, why I have no idea, guess I just wasn’t thinking. :/ Yes, I’m sure we could get an appointment at the vet, my mom and I are just a little wary getting any anesthesia/surgery done on him, since Lion is an older bun and he’d no doubt react strongly against it, and that could lead to stress and all sorts of other problems. I’ll see what I can do.

Eye injuries are common in rabbits as well. If they run into something, for example, they can scratch their eye. A vet would be able to determine if there is damage to the cornea by putting dye in his eye. If there isn’t any injury, then the next step would be to look into a tooth root problem as the others have suggested.
