I have a 4 year old Netherland Dwarf girl who stopped eating and pooping 3 days ago. I tried belly massages for a few hours that night, but nothing got better. I took her to the vet the next morning and they indicated the reason could be either lack of water since I don’t see her drink very much (the vet said she didn’t seem dehydrated though), or the little worms that I found in her poops a few months ago. They gave me Bene-bac for her gut and I was to give that to her once that day, and once again in 3 days. They also gave me dewormer medicine but said not to give that to her until this case seemed to clear up.
Upon bringing her back home, she started eating a little bit and running around like normal.. like she wasn’t in any pain. I’ve been giving her water and pedialyte via mouth syringe a few times a day, rubbing her belly, and trying to entice her to eat with fresh veggies. She started pooping again when we got her home from the vet but they were very small, and she has been eating – more and more each day since. I was optimistic she was pulling out of it as her energy was really high and she was running around and her poops were getting bigger/better, and she was eating more and more (still not as much as normal though).. But today when I came home from work, she was hunched up in a ball grinding her teeth. All my worries immediately came back. I looked around for her poops today and I found some.. But they were tiny again like the first day. She ate a tiny bit of dill I tried to give her, but then stopped after the first few pieces and refused to eat anything else.
I’ve been giving her papaya tablets, included in the picture, here. My vet said they would help. But since she’s picky about eating with this whole stasis thing, the only way I can get her to eat them is by crushing them into a small piece of banana. I know sugar/treats are counterproductive in this case, but the vet said the benefits of the tablets outweigh the negative effects from the banana.
Any advice or recommendations on what I can do?
How long does stasis usually last?
Does it wax/wane in periods, getting better than worse?
Any help, information, or advice would be absolutely appreciated. I’m worried so much again.
Thank you.
