I bought the adult Oxbow formula for my buns now that they’re 6 months. Over the past week I’ve been slowly introducing it mixed with their old food. Bombur has taken to it easily, but Asriel has left more than half of it the past 2 days. He’s eating plenty of hay and all his greens, and he would usually finish the old pellets. I’m thinking he just doesn’t like the taste. Any other suggestions for adult food, besides Oxbow? They were being fed Purina Complete Advantage, but I’d really like to avoids using it into Asriel’s adult life because it has corn and the nutrient breakdown isn’t optimal.
        Any help is welcome

I’d keep persisting if I were you. When I transitioned my buns from junior to adult (Burgess to oxbow), they would leave the adult pellets at first but then gradually cone back to them. It took a few weeks but eventually they were on all adult and very enthusiastic about it

I give mine Burgess adult with mint – is Oxbow better Sarah?

As Sarah says, persistence is needed when introducing buns to adult pellets. Junior pellets are yummier because they’re richer. They’re often alfalfa based. As you know, adult buns don’t need as rich food as babies, but they still want it, because they’re rabbits =)

Another good adult pellet with a high fibre-content is Fibafirst, in case they absolutely won’t eat the Oxbow, but I think they will if you out-stubborn them. Burgess is good too and some give Supreme selective science. In the USA there’s Sherwood.

I don’t know if any specific brand will be better for your bun than others, but what your doing sounds like a really good mix for your bun! ?

I’m not sure what the Burgess adult has in it but I remember reading that the Burgess junior had egg shell in it so I decided to just stay away from Burgess altogether.

Ooh gross  My little one (he’s 6 months old but very small) is still on Burgess junior, so maybe I should start transitioning him. Why on earth would egg shell be needed in bunny pellets?!

I see Burgess also has soya bean hulls in. Is that normal? Doesn’t sound good!

(sorry to hijack your thread about pellets… it’s still semi relevant but happy to start my own if prefered!)

Egg shell is sometimes added to animal food because it consists mainly of calcium carbonate, which is chemically the same as whiting or chalk. It’s a calcium source that’s well absorbed by the body. When I cook food for my dog, I add finely ground eggshells for calcium. Oxbow has limestone in it, that’s another source of calcium.

Soy is a somewhat controversial ingredient. It’s very common in animal food. Oxbow has rabbit food variants without soy, but the Bunny Basic essentials all have soy. It adds protein and fiber to a diet.

It’s somewhat difficult to find soy-free rabbit food. There are some though, both in Europe and the USA.

That’s really interesting about the egg shell Bam. Who’d have thought!
