        Hello Binkybunny fam,

It’s been a while since I have posted. My holland lop doe just turned 6 months recently. She’s super sweet, a bit shy and timid, EXCELLENT with litter habits (not a single accident. She doesn’t even let a poo ball drop outside of her litter box). She hates peeing or pooping anywhere but the exact corner of her litter box. No hormonal behavior, and a very curious & happy bun. I know the general consensus is that I  MUST get my bunny spayed due to health (cancer) reasons. I understand this. I suppose a part of me can’t help but think what if my baby will be that 20% that won’t get cancer and I don’t need her to be cut open and have her uterus yanked out?

I love her so much. I hate the thought of dropping her off at the vet’s and have her thrash around while they give her anesthetic and cut her open to take her organ out. It makes my stomach turn. I know a lot of people do it but I can’t bear the thought of it. I know most people say that it will make her happier, but at the end of the day- this is a very unnatural thing that we are doing to animals.

Due to pressure, I’m caving and about to book a spay appointment. What should I expect? What should I prepare for? Will her litterbox habits change at all? How do I make sure she’s comfortable throughout the process? I hear too many stories about how people’s buns seemingly get more destructive AFTER the spay/neuter. I don’t want to do anything I’ll regret. Thank you

The most important thing, and I can’t stress this enough, is to have a vet that REGULARLY and SUCCESSFULLY performs spays on rabbits. I’m not sure how many spays count as “regular” but the failure rate of the vet’s spay surgeries should be no higher than 1%. To ensure she is comfortable throughout the process, make sure you prep for her return home from surgery. Her movement will have to be restricted until she heals, you’ll need to monitor her body temperature and make sure she stays warm for the first couple days, and she must have pain meds at home. Her personality should remain the same, though she will be a little off for the first few days. I’ve never heard of a bun becoming more destructive after a spay.

I don’t know if I would. I certainly wouldn’t do something (especially something as major as an op) due to external pressure!!!

Do your own research and make an educated decision after that. It really sits unwell with me, *anyone* doing anything out of being emotionally pressured into it.
