  My rabbit has always been in a wire cube type cage but I want something that goes more with my room. I looked up housing for rabbits but I don’t want to risk anything. I want to build Oreo a hutch type housing that’s two floors. I’ll thinking of using wood and mesh. Any advice on using a certain type of wood and if wire mesh is okay? I’m afraid she’d might chew on the wood so I’m not too sure about building this hutch or sticking to a wire cube cage. Also, I have been using storage containers as litter boxes, is there anything else I can use? She sometimes likes to chew on the plastic even when she has plenty of chew toys and hay.

  I recommend you talk to @spunkysmokey. He recently built a splendid cage for his own bun Smokey, of the type you’re thinking about; you can find the thread in Habitats and Toys complete with picture.

  You won’t be using wire for the floor, will you? That really hurts their feet.
  
  Also, if you have the tools and space handy, you could look into repurposing a piece of furniture into a hutch. I am doing something similar. I hated the look of a cage so I wanted to have something that fit in the house and didn’t stand out as an ugly wire cage.
  
  Perhaps you could even make it match the furniture in your room!
  
  Pinterest has a TON of ideas for repurposed furniture hutches.

  You want something that has about 1″ square spaces or thereabouts – my condo’s wire cube grids have 1.3″ square spaces, which is a touch on the large side but works well for my Polish rabbits; it’s large enough for them to poke the tips of their noses through and to admit my fingers for giving treats and rubbing Fernando’s forehead (Panda is still more standoffish about that), but not so large that it risks getting their heads or feet stuck. @spunkysmokey used chicken wire, which seems to have about the same measurements, and depending on how much it costs in your area, you might want to think about using that.

  Definitely fine to use some sort of wire for ventilation. I used hardware cloth that has 1/2 inch squares. It’s somewhat easy to manipulate, and can just be stapled on with a staple gun. Just be sure to get sharp wire cutters if you use hardware cloth. I started with full ones but it made the cuts every sharp and pointy. Of course you want to avoid that where bun will be!
