Quincy was neutered on 8/24 so he is 4 full days post op. He’s been acting totally normal, eating, pooping running around…. but I just finally got a good look without him squirming and I am wondering if this is normal????????? It’s like pink/purple they look bruised almost. No redness or inflammation or drainage. They just look so botched and I didn’t know if they should look like this?!?!

Some bruising is normal. As long as the swelling has subsided and there is no redness, then I wouldn’t be too worried. It’s always good to keep an eye though to make sure everything continues to heal.

Bruising is ok as long as there are no signs of infection (which you know).

Thanks guys! I was able to send it in an email to the vet and she said it looked normal. I feel so bad that I did this to him lol it doesn’t look pleasant!

Looks nice and not angry (red) or swollen

I’m a bit paranoid in checking Mickey’s neuter incision multiple times a day (after Theo’s nightmare neuter)! But so far it looks great. The vet did a pre-scrotal neuter this time, at my request. Was yours a scrotal neuter, do you know? It’s hard for me to tell from the pic but it looks like it.
I’ve read that a pre-scrotal is usually less painful for a bunny (post-op) and practiced by most rabbit-savvy vets nowadays, which is why I asked about it.

No I don’t know, I didn’t even know that there were different ways of doing it! And I am sure after the nightmare that you had it must have been so hard to think about going through that again!

I only felt his bits before, so I don’t know what they looked like before all of this I try not to pick the buns up unless I absolutely have to. I had been only feeling the area for the first three days, because he just would not stop squirming when I tried to pick him up and I didn’t want to hurt him so I haven’t looked at it at all until yesterday. If he was acting different or not eating I would have definitely been more vigilant to look at it. But yesterday when I felt it really felt “scabby” so I was like look dude, ya gotta let me see!! I spent 15 minutes trying to pick him up with a towel and turn him over. Twice he just kicked around and ran up my shoulder, but I finally got him to CALMLY sit for a second while I took this picture. I thought I saw a suture so I called the vet because I was told they are using glue. The vet looked at the pic and called me, you can’t tell from the pic but on the side of one of them there’s something clear but also white-ish? which she said was just dried glue. They said I can bring him back in if I want so they can check in person, but that it looks fine.

I can see the white bit now that mention it! I find it rather easy to pick Mickey up and cradle him against my chest to take a peek. I only take a second or two to look at the incision. With Theo’s neuter, he was eating and drinking and pooing and peeing, behaving normally, but he had an infection. So I feel I have to check Mickey :/

When would you say we don’t have to worry anymore about infections, like 10 days after neuter? I wonder how far along they can still get infected. I guess until it is fully healed and sealed over. So two to three weeks?

I would think you’re probably in the clear about 2 weeks post op. How is little Mickey doing? Quincy came home and went right back to his normal self!

Mickey’s doing well, too, perky and eating his noms and doing his toilet business.
He’s getting metacam for 5 days. After I give it to him he seems to zonk out for a while
                        Is Quincy on pain meds?

The vet said Mickey bounced back after anesthesia so quickly and even scratched her on the collar bone (I think she was holding him at the time lol… whoops).
I saw the scratch mark, that was pretty bad! She said he’s got a very strong will for ‘life’ hahaha.. I was proud about that, I mean, that’s a good thing!

That is a good thing to have a fighter bun!

They only gave me three doses of metacam for him. I have two doses left over from Ophelia’s spay at the end of June, and yesterday I did give it to him even though he seemed fine. I gave it to him because he jumped up on the couch, which he has never done! It isn’t THAT high up, but I just have never seen him jump on anything. After that he stayed on the couch just pacing back and forth, I don’t think he could figure out how to get down. I checked his bits and they were still fine, but I was petting him and noticed that he was not laying down all the way back there, so I thought he might have caused himself some discomfort with that jump. I have one more dose but I don’t think he will need it tonight. He loves metacam though lol. Bunny drugs

I’m giving Mickey the full 5 days of metacam. Don’t want to risk it hurting and then him licking it. He’s going for a post-op check up today – vet demanded to see him after 3 days. All looks okay as of now

Yeah, Metacam is very popular among bunnies

It’s funny how buns like to climb but often, the first time, have no idea how to get back down. Noobs.

I am really surprised to hear that Q8— both me and Wick hated metacam! It smelled really strong and was weirdly gooey… Maybe because Wick and I are used to Baytril, which is clear, pretty tasteless and odorless as well. Wick would smell metacam and excuse himself accordingly, haha.

I’m glad to hear recovery is going well BN!!!

Both of mine just loved the stuff! Made it easy for me since I didn’t have to fight them to get them to take it! Maybe because it’s almost like syrup?

Yes I just checked him last night and they have shrinked back down to their normal small size! They didn’t look inflamed before, as it wasn’t red, but I suppose there still was some swelling because they are smaller now.

Most formulations of Metacam smell and taste like honey. But not all, I’m afraid.

He has been doing great since he came home! I am so grateful that I haven’t had complications with either his neuter or Ophelia’s spay!! I’m glad that there are two experienced vets quite close to me. While they did do an awesome job on the surgery….I am so disappointed in the service I received at both places.

West End Animal Hospital- I picked Ophelia up after her spay (she had been done first thing in the morning so she was about 10 hours port op already) and neither the reception or vet techs could tell me if she had eaten ANYTHING. The vet tech kept calling her “it” which really got on my nerves after a while (but I’m just sensitive when it comes to them). And then I paid $70 for what they called an “initial health exam” and I asked how much she weighed and what they knew from the exam and they could not even tell me how much she weighed…. I got the $70 refunded and vowed to take Quincy to the other experienced vet.

Hilltop Animal Hospital- I sent Quincy with a bag full of alfalfa, a yummy fresh spring mix salad that had matchstick carrots and bell pepper in it, and his treat ball with pellets (I thought something to keep him busy might make him less scared). I asked the receptionist, the vet tech, AND wrote down a little note in his bag as well, explaining that I wanted the salad offered to him after as a little morale booster When I picked him up, they couldn’t even find my bag, I got handed back EVERYTHING I sent him with, and had to toss the Ziploc bag of salad because they never gave it to him and never put it in the fridge like they said, so it was all spoiled. I also asked that they call me after the surgery to let me know how it went. No one called, so I finally called at lunch time, and they had told me that he was out and he was eating. When I was handed back everything I sent, I asked what he ate since they didn’t give him any of my food and she said “um I don’t really know but I think we have hay”…..

Maybe I am just being a sensitive brat, but I was so unimpressed with how they were treated at both of these vets. I NEVER got to talk to an actual vet besides 1 phone call about Ophelia’s spay telling me that she was fine and 1 email that I sent of a picture of Quincy’s neuter. And I don’t understand why both places couldn’t just follow SIMPLE instructions and give them the food I sent, monitor and tell me what they had eaten so far, etc. I know that their vets are very experienced and both had very smooth surgeries but, I just am afraid of them ever getting sick because I feel like the vets don’t CARE, and the techs certainly don’t at all!

Sorry for the novel of a review of my experience at the vets lol

Also, I asked FOUR TIMES for them to do a nail trim on Quincy while he was under and they didn’t.

Now I have to figure out getting him clipped. His feet are SOOOO fuzzy, so I feel like it will be difficult to do by myself because all that fur is in the way.

If you wet your finger tips, you can flatten the fur back. I have a small cup by me when doing Wick’s nails.

I understand your frustration, BN. I often hear stories of peeps working in animal health care who don’t even seem to like animals, let alone sensitively and compassionately treat their furry patients. I almost wonder if they’ve desensitized themselves in order to survive the heartbraking situations they must inevitably encounter.

But I’m glad Quincy’s doing well. I’m guessing no more signs of ouch after his unexpected jump discovery?

No more signs of ouch! But now he does just love to jump up on the couch with us. And then he just steps all over you in his hopping back and forth from one end to the other…. it’s actually pretty cute to watch him peep over the edge of the cushion and look down cause his big floppy ears dangle over his eyes

I’ll have to try that method Wick. He’s very cuddly but he is still quite squirmy with me touching his little floofs at all.
