        Hey everybody.

So after my Tilly passed away I got another bunny for his buddy who was taking it a little hard. We knew someone getting rid of a bunny so we took her in, took her to the vet, got her spayed. They bonded without practically any effort. I thought about it and decided I really wanted a third bunny, in case anything were to happen to one in the future, and also just because I love my bunnies.

So we decided to go through a shelter. Today I went in to meet with the rabbits and talked to their “expert”. She seemed really put off by the fact I had other rabbits. She said they don’t get along. I know that’s true for some and bonding can be hard – it was really hard to bond Tilly and Gizmo – but saying rabbits don’t get along with other rabbits seemed just weird to me. She also seemed to question me when I said I had two bonded pairs before.

I guess it’s maybe from working in a shelter where I’m sure people have gotten rid of animals for not getting along, but the attitude was so strange to me. Is there something I’m missing?

I don’t believe you’re missing anything or making a mistake. It doesn’t sound to me as if that “expert” really knows that much about rabbits as she claims she does. Bonding a third bun to two buns can certainly be done, and @Blanca just successfully completed a three-way bond with her Maggie, Lily and Terry (see her thread elsewhere in this subforum), in fact, she’s working now on making it a foursome by adding her Greebo. My own buns’ foster mom, as I’ve mentioned a couple of times, has a full half-dozen bunnies in a big ol’ group bond!

I’ve actually entertained the thought once of twice of adding a third rabbit to my current pair of Panda and Fernando for the reason you cite as well as others, but that might have to wait until I’m in a position to get a bigger apartment since it’s pretty snug quarters in my efficiency for the three of us right now! Anyway, I’m looking at P&F right now on the upper deck of their condo and they’re snuggled up lovingly nose-to-nose, so so much for that “expert”.

Is there a rabbit rescue organization near you? Just about all rabbit rescues have at least one person who’s really knowledgeable about bonding.

I was seriously thinking maybe I was underestimating how hard bonding is. I just couldn’t believe this woman was telling me rabbits don’t get along with other rabbits! I know yes, some don’t, and yes, bonding can be hard, but in my experience they are social creatures who can do well in a pair. There are some rabbit rescues around. I went to the shelter because it was the easiest to get to and I met the bunnies before talking to her so of course I fell in love and wanted them all.

I will definitely look at her posts, thanks!

Your bunnies look like my Tilly and Gizmo! Who clearly didn’t get along and I just made it all up http://imgur.com/3Przr5X

Maybe she isn’t used to talking to people who have bonded pairs, and was referring to the fact that you can’t just put two rabbits together and expect them to get along without going through the whole bonding process?

I wonder if she is used to dealing with people who think they are like dogs, which mostly get along with other dogs without incident.

But, yeah I agree that she doesn’t sound like much of an “expert”!

Yeah, I can’t imagine what she deals with at a shelter, especially when she probably sees people giving away their animals for various reasons. When I told her I’d had two bonded pairs already, she asked if they were strangers. I told her yes, but she seemed kind of off put by it.

I still have to go through an interview and send them pics of my setup, so I’m not even sure if they’ll let me adopt at this point.

                Thanks!!

Borken, I got your PM – sorry I was delayed responding but I was in the middle of another floor session with my buns. If you live in the DC metro area, I strongly recommend you contact Friends of Rabbits. They’re having an event at Pet Supplies Plus in Fairfax tomorrow morning at 11 and their head lady Susan, who usually hosts that particular event, knows a lot about bonding.

FoR does also do the questionnaire thing and ask for pictures of your setup, but they’re easy to work with and great people. They have a lot of bunnies they’re eager to adopt out and from what I see on their Facebook page they’re participating with other rescues nationwide in a major operation so they’re probably going to be getting a big influx of new buns soon. I’m pretty sure they’ll be delighted to work with someone who’s already experienced with rabbits and is looking to increase their fluffle!
