Bombur has been a pretty healthy bun since we got him, except for his neuter issue. Just now I noticed that he was rubbing his nose a lot and when I looked it was all matted. I checked if it was water but it was thick and mucus like. He had a little schmootz next to his nose too. His paws are both slightly matted, and his nose looks a bit swollen. He’s eating fine, but seems a tad tired. He was up and running around all morning, so this came on pretty quick. He seems to be eating and drinking normally. It is mounting season, and I noticed that his cage area seems to be covered in hair ? But it hasn’t been for long, and I noticed the AC was covered in hair too. I’ve been brushing them, but they seem to shed constantly! Any idea what it could be? I’m not able to really bring him to the vet until Saturday either, so is it something I need to get taken care of asap? Advice is appreciated!

At the moment, either could really be a possibility. A new environmental factor could trigger allergies and sneezing, while stress or time could trigger a dormant respiratory infection.

I believe what differentiates URIs from the regular sneeze reaction is sneeze attacks and sneezes at times not associated with an irritant (eating hay, dusty room or carpet) and when very developed, white, or other colored nasal discharge.

Vacuum everything and see if it clears up. If not, it could be an infection, in which case vet sooner rather than later to try and nip it in the bud. Until vet, find some echinacea to feed him (even good quality tablets are fine, or a paste made of the contents echinacea tea bags and a bit of water or banana puree)

I planned on staying home tomorrow and cleaning everything. Their fur accumulated so darn quickly! For the echinacea, is a dropper okay? And put it with his food or water? How much should I give him too?

Wick: he hasn’t been sneezing a ton. Just his normal once or twice a day for a few seconds. I checked him again this morning and his fur was fine and not matted. So fingers crossed it’s just the excess fur in the area.

That’s pretty infrequent, so if the cleaning does not alleviate the sneezing, or if it begins to ramp up in frequency, make a point to schedule an appointment. As Q8 says, the earlier with an infection, the better.

I have no experience with echinacea drops – I feed Chewie the contents of one tea bag with some mashed banana, or a flower or two when I can get them.
