        Hello All

A little bit about us. We bought our first bunny four years ago – a white Lion Head/Lop cross named Kimi. We immediately fell in love with his character and realized how rewarding rabbits can be as pets. When he grew up and we upgraded his cage, we thought he was getting very lonely and decided to get him a companion. This came in the face of Malinka – a brown unidentified as of yet breed (we’ve been told she has Dutch in her). She is the complete opposite of Kimi and they complete each other perfectly (after some challenging bonding). They have been living happily together for two and a half years now. Kimi has been neutered and Malinka spayed.

Now to the problem. Two weeks ago we came back from a two week long holiday during which Kimi and Malinka were staying at the usual pet carer where they always do when we are away. On the day they were brought back to us, we noticed something very unusual and scary happening to Malinka. As soon as she laid down on her stomach she starting making very fast clicking noises with her mouth and twitching her head diagonally upwards to the left. She is not in pain and she comes to her senses in about 5 seconds. This has been happening continuously since then – now 13 days. She only does this when she is relaxed and laying down. It doesn’t always happen, probably 50% of the time she is laying down.
We took her to our vets 11 days ago and during initial examination they found nothing. Her heart rate is ok, eyes ok and ears don’t have anything inside or out.
Apart from this twitch, she is the same old bunny as always – runs and jumps around, eats and drinks as normal and grooms her friend Kimi.
I have taken a couple of videos of her doing it, which I am going to share with you on the links below. I have also sent these to our vets who have agreed to forward them onto a rabbit specialist as they don’t know what it is either.
I would appreciate if you could advise on what this might be.

        Video1 – twitch starts at 01:00.
        Video2

        Thank you for your help.

First of all: they’re both so pretty!

Secondly: did the vet test her for e.c.? It doesn’t look normal to me either, it seems more like something neurological… if she’s been with other buns it could be she caught something. e.c. test isn’t 100% accurate, but if the vet sees fit you could treat both Malinka and Kimi with a course of Panacur to see if the symptoms subside (Kimi’s treatment would be just for safety in case Malinka does have e.c.)

Or maybe it could be some sort of petit mal epylepsy, which can be treated with other medicines but I don’t have idea how they diagnose it in rabbits…

            They are a sweet pair.

I agree. there is something neurological going on. Possibly with the cranial nerves as it looks like she has a spasm.

In people, this would be called spasmodic torticollis due to muscles contracting in the neck. But I do think she has some face muscles affected too.

She has a bit of a small eye twitch happen at 0:38 seconds. She is holding her ears at different angles in 1st video too. Is that normal for her?

Torticollis (also called wry neck or head tilt) is a well known condition in rabbits but usually the head will stay in the tilted position. With Malinka, she returns to normal right after the spasm.

Her going on an anti-inflammatory med would be a good starting point until it’s better known what the cause might be.

Thank you for the replies and for the compliments – I shall pass them on

The vet didn’t test her for e.c. as they said that it’s not worth it and it will only show exposure rather than infection.
After reading your replies we spoke to her vet and suggested treatment for e.c. They agreed, but instead of Panacur they prescribed her Lapizole as it’s in liquid form and can be dosed more precisely. She has been on it for 2 days now. Kimi is not being treated. We’ll see if her symptoms subside and if they do we’ll put Kimi on the treatment as well.

The eye twitch at 0:38 in Video1 is just a blink and is completely normal for her, as is the different position of the ears.

At least I have seen her sleeping without being interrupted by the twitch/spasm, which was one of my concerns.

I’ll keep you posted on her condition and once again thank you for the advice.

                Hi

I though I should post an update, even though it’s been over a year.

The treatment with Lapizole didn’t help Malinka with the head twitch.

However, in October 2017, a couple of months after my initial post, Malinka’s twitch stopped as suddenly as it appeared. Since then she’s had only about 4-5 light episodes of twitching and has had none in 3 months. Apart from that she is in great health.

It’s unfortunate that we didn’t get to find out what was wrong.
