I have a 5 year old, male, French angora, Muffin, that woke up this morning with a bulging right eye and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this.

About a year ago, he was treated for an upper respiratory infection and a runny eye with baytril and antibiotic eye drops. With this came lack of appetite and hypothermia. He recovered quickly and without any issues. Then in March 2017 he was treated for another eye infection and skin dermatitis with cipro eye drops and a sulfa oral antibiotic, after which he recovered. Then last Thursday, he was again diagnosed with an infection in his left eye and given oral baytril and a steroid/antiobiotic eye drop.

So this morning when I went to give him his meds and breakfast, I noticed the eye was slightly bulging. I work 12 hour evening shifts and his eye was completely normal the 14 hours or so before when I gave him the meds. He had an emergency appointment at the vet and his dose of baytril was increased to the maximum mg/kg dose, Metacam was added for inflammation and pain, and the eye drops are to be continued. The vet wants to touch base again tomorrow. In his opinion it is an infection behind the eye, a tumor, or glaucoma. He also has swollen lymph nodes in his lower jaw area.

Now his eye is bulging to the point that the lids cannot close and a membrane is protruding and I’m not sure what to do. I’m sure his eye is painful and he is very reluctant to eat much. His eye looks terrible. The vet said that the steps to take tomorrow would be an x ray under anesthesia, which I’m nervous about because of his poor general health. The vet also said that removing the eye and looking for the cause of the bulging is an option but Muffin is a considered a senior rabbit at this age due to his size and while removing the eye is a easy procedure, whatever is behind the eye likely has a poor outcome This is a rabbit savvy vet.

So, I guess I’m looking for advice, opinions, moral support.
