        Hello all knowledgeable bunny lovers,
I’ve recently had a problem with my sweet bun freaking out and running all around her cage (it’s a metal exercise pen) and even throwing herself at the walls of it when me or my boyfriend walk up the stairs to the room she’s in. She isn’t normally very afraid of anything and we’ve had her since she was a baby (she’s almost 2 now) so she’s very well acquainted with us and is such a sweet and loving bunny. It is SO scary and I’m worried if she keeps freaking out like this she’s going to seriously hurt herself. She doesn’t do it all the time, and everytime we walk up the stairs we call her name so she knows we’re there but every once in a while she just freaks out. Does anyone have any advice to how I can help prevent this or has had this problem before?

Is she alone the majority of the day? Is she in her cage the majority of the day? It might help to have her in a more populated area. Like, if you and your partner are in the living room more often, set her cage up in the living room and add a pen if you cant let her free roam it.

It could also be that something has her terrified, and hearing your steps makes it worse. New smells, inside or outside? New recipes, or cooking more often? New sounds, inside or outside? You or your partner home more or less often than before? Storming outside? Construction outisde?

It might seem unrelated, but is she spayed? Radical behavioral changes in an adult animal can have a physiological reason. An unspayed 2-year old girl bun could be having trouble with her reproductive organs. That can cause behavioral changes, I esp remember one case here. That bun went back to normal a few months after her spay. She had abnormal changes to her uterus, sth that’s very common in unspayed female buns.
