Hi there, I’m new! Also a fairly new bun owner (~5 months).

My little boy Mochi has never been super sociable but recently he has become very withdrawn and shy. He only comes out of his little barn hiding place to eat and visit the litter box. His poops are normal and he’s still eating the normal amount, but he doesn’t play outside of his cage anymore. I have a few theories:

        1. It’s very hot where I am now and he’s simply trying to stay out of the heat and not work up a sweat. (I try to keep it as cool as possible and he has frozen water bottles in his cage that he lays against.

        2. We recently replaced his hiding place with a bigger, more secluded one. He could just be really into it?

        3. We recently trimmed his nails for the first time at home. I made very sure not to cut into the quick so only took very little off. However, this was after he started to be less active and it was our first thought at what the problem might be, so I don’t think that’s it.

        4. He’s not feeling well in some other way.

Any ideas/suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Hi! Buns do tend to be less active when it gets hot. It’s good that you are giving him some nice cool water bottles . Changes in environment or routine can cause buns to act different too. I would just keep an eye out for any changes in eating/pooping or any additional behavior changes aside from him hiding in his barn, as it could indicate he is not feeling well/sick.
