If only I could be so proud of this “first”!
I came home for lunch to find urine sprayed on the side of Olaf’s cage and the wall beyond it. It wasn’t a lot, but he’s never (in the two years that I’ve had him) ever sprayed before. It was in his loft, where he spends most of his afternoon napping. His litter box is on the first floor of the cage on the opposite side. It was his usual orange-y hue.
He’s only had two accidents since I’ve known him and they were both large puddles (once when I first got him and, later, when he was having some tummy troubles and couldn’t make it to the box). This spray was light and not all all close to the same volume. There was none on the floor or his favorite towel where he sits. Only on the side of the coroplast and wall.
Of course, my first concern is a medical issue. However, he has been eating as normal and shows no sign of problems in his litter box or unusual behavior. Previously, if Olaf has been feeling unwell (usually gassy) he will lay in his cardboard diggy box looking rather sad and restless. None of that this time around. He’s perky, alert, and has his usual eager appetite. Water seems to be consistent, too, no lapse in drinking. I did wet his veggies to be sure he’s getting enough for now.
If it is territorial, what could cause something like that in an otherwise calm rabbit? He has been neutered since six months (now 2 years old) and never showed this behavior before or after I had him fixed. I haven’t made any dietary or cage changes. He has otherwise been acting like his usual self.
Thoughts? I’m more curious than anything else – and hoping this is a one-time situation.
Thank you!
