  Our bunnies Poppy and Oreo (both females) were recently spayed (Thursday 20th). They were both born on 17th March and were very close up until a week ago when they started fighting, Oreo was doing a lot of sniffing and Poppy wasn’t keen.
  
  The op went well and we have them both in separate cages next to each other. We noticed that Poppy was licking and nibbling at her wound. We tried our hardest to deter her from doing it but to no avail. We took her straight back to the vet who said that it doesn’t look like she’s done much nibbling as the wound looks okay. We left her overnight and took her back to the vet the next day, this time we saw her usual vet who said that she’s definitely been at it and that we’d need to give her antibiotics so prevent infection and then look at getting a cone or some kind of protection for the wound. This has been almost impossible. We’ve tried a sock, a premature baby grow but nothing covers the wound.
  
  I’m hoping for some advice and reassurance that she’s going to be okay. She’s so skittish at the minute. She is eating and drinking so no concerns there.
  
  We’re looking to slowly introduce them again but Oreo is still doing a lot of sniffing which makes us nervous. How long do we let her sniff for before breaking them up.

  Those rigid cones are irritating for a rabbit to wear, the softer E collars are somewhat better. I don’t know which one you may have tried. I think there was a thread here recently where someone came up with a good homemade solution to keep their rabbit from chewing a surgical site, but I don’t know what materials they used to form a protective barrier. Hopefully, someone else remembers what that was or can post a link to the thread.
  
  Poppy and Oreo need to be kept separated for a few weeks, until they have healed and in order for their hormones to die down. You can keep their pens near each other, but they shouldn’t be allowed any physical contact for a few weeks. You are risking fighting and injuries if they get together now.

  Thanks tobyluv, I’m reluctant to put a cone on her as I’ve read that it can be very bad for the bunny. We are at the vet again tonight so fingers crossed. I’ve saw that people have used socks and small baby grows but after trying I feel like we’re doing something wrong.
  
  I keep hearing conflicting stories about putting them together again. We were told that it could take a few days before we could introduce them (supervised) as they are both female and we’ve also been told that we should keep them apart for at least 10 days. They’re both used to having the run of their room and now they’re confined to their cage with limited exercise time to protect their wounds but they’re both constantly pulling at the cage trying to open it

  Well after our trip to the Vet last night Oreo is healing nicely and will soon be free to roam around as she pleases. Poppy on the other hand has done herself some damage. The surface of her wound looks sore and scabby so we’ll continue with antibiotics and a honey based cream to help speed up the healing process. We discussed in length the options we had with regards to protecting the wound and it turns out that there’s ‘Medical Rabbit Vests’ of which we have ordered 2.
  
  I’ll update once we’ve tried them. We’ve ordered from here – http://www.vetsend.co.uk/medical-pet-shirt-rabbit/ just in case there is anyone else on here who is having similar issues with there Bun.

  I agree with tobyluv that they need to be separated for a few weeks, and you can keep their cages near each other (but far enough so they can’t bite each other through the bars). That vest is a great idea! I hope it works for her.

  I hope that Poppy will heal soon and that the medical vest will be helpful.
  
  Even 10 days apart may not be long enough. It can take a month or more for the hormones to dissipate. I would wait at least 10 days after Poppy has healed before starting bonding procedures. If you see any aggression, halt the sessions and wait another week or two before trying again. You don’t want any injuries, and you don’t want either of them to hold a grudge if the other one goes after them. That can make future bonding very difficult. They only had a temporary baby bunny bond at first, but now you will have to go through a regular bonding process for a permanent bond.

  Thank you. I have everything crossed that the vest will work. Then we can relax a little and look forward to having 2 fully fit bunnies.
  
  We plan on keeping them apart for another 2 weeks before having them out of their cage (supervised). They are close by at the moment so they can see each other.
  
  Thanks for the links. I’ll have a look at these. I also found some very useful videos online so hopefully all goes well.
