My rabbit was neutered going on 6 days ago, and the day after he was neutered, he ripped out some of his stitches so I put a cone on him. He can still eat, drink, and even lick himself a little bit but I can tell it is driving him crazy. The vet said to leave the cone on for 10 days but I just feel like that is a bit long. Because he did pull out his stitches though, I don’t want to risk taking the cone off at 5 days like I did for my other bunny. Should I take the cone off now or just leave it on for the full 10 days? I just feel so bad for him.

Leave it on for the full 10 days. Its better he cant irritate his wounds than to pull stitches out again.

Keep an eye on him and on the surgical wound, remain in touch with the vet by phone. If he gets very distressed (so if it starts to affect his eating/pooping/etc) you can make the decision with the vet

I know how bad you feel leaving the cone on him  but he clearly needs it and if you take it off he could go at his stitches again in which case he’d have to be in the cone even longer… prolonging the whole process.. I’m facing a similar situation with my bun and just keeping it on until the vet says it’s safe to take off. It’s hard, but necessary. You might be able to take it off while you watch him, but I find that mine goes straight to lick his you know what, and getting those damn things on again can be tricky!

I can sympathize as my first bunny needed a cone for over a week after his neuter. I felt so awful seeing him like that. Not sure if this would work for your bunny, but after the first week, I would take it off him for like a half hour or so every day so he could wash, scratch his ears etc.

Thank you all so much. Fortunately, today was the day I could take it off of him and he seems so much happier again! @Theo&Mickey, I hope you can take it off of your poor bun soon too! Hopefully I can start rebonding him with my other bun soon.
