  My rabbit is 4 months old and I was told he was a girl at first but when I went to pick him up to take him home at 7 weeks old I was told he was actually a boy. The vet I have contacted to get him neutered waits tell 4 months to neuter and 6 months to spay. This vet is the best vet I’ve found but is more then an hour drive to get to. So I want to find out what gender he is before driving an hour to get him neutered and find out he’s not a boy. So I was wondering if I could get some pointers to try to find out his gender.
  
  Also if he turns out to be a girl would it be fine if I changed his name. When I thought he was a girl I was going to name him Bailey but finding out he was a boy I decided to name him Shadow. Is it fine to change his name?

  If you see testicles, he is a boy. If you do not see testicles, she is a girl. It can take up to six months for testicles to drop, though. Either name is fine; both are unisex anyway.

  Absence of family jewels does not guarantee it is a girl, but there is no doubt is they are there.

  It can take a while for even really experienced vets to identify the sex of some rabbits. On males, there are little stubs that develop into testes, but these aren’t always so prominent. Wick’s testicles didn’t descend until 8mo! For a neutering, it shouldn’t really be scheduled until the testicles descend, so that’s not something you should schedule really ahead of time, at least that’s my understanding for the safest operation.
  
  I would wait a bit longer and see if testicles descend. If not, Shadow may be s girl. Name change is fine. Generally rabbits don’t care haha.

  7 weeks us a but early to tell. R months is a lot easier. Could u post a pick of the “Jewel” area? We could look at the pic and help u determine. If u put your index and middle finger on either side of the external genitalia and gently press, a boys buts will protrude slightly with a circle opening. The female bits will have a more triangular opening.

  My vet today said boys generally need 6 months before they get neutered.
