  This fall I will be studying abroad in Madrid (I am a college student) for a semester and I think I will have to leave my bun, Zucchini, behind. Zucchini is an emotional support pet that I rescued several months ago and we have spent a lot of time bonding. He is 5.5 years old. I live alone with no roommates, and he depends on me a lot for affection and is really cuddly, albeit sometimes a little needy. I am really nervous to leave him.
  
  I have a friend who he is familiar with who agreed to take him for the fall, but I just have a few questions.
  
  1. Will he remember me when I come back?
  
  2. Will he hate me for leaving?
  
  3. Should I talk to my host family/school and ask if I can take him with me, or would that be too much? He has travelled in a plane but only for a few hours. He also goes to work with me sometimes on the train, which is an hour-long ride.

  I would leave him with your friend. Travelling abroad with animals isn’t always easy and there are often quarantine restrictions either one or both ways that mean you could spend as much as half your time apart even if you did take him with.
  
  He won’t hate you for leaving, he may be a little grumpy with you when you get back, but they soon get over it. I’m sure that he will remember you I lived with a family overseas for 3 months, and returned a year later and their dog was so excited to see me when I got back

  I do agree about leaving him with your friend also. You would need to vaccinate against some viral diseases if taking him to Spain and those vaccines may be hard to acquire depending on where you live. Some countries have restrictions also, about bringing animals back in if they are vaccinated.
  
  He wont hate you. You’ll just do some rebonding with him, like you are bonding now.
