I live in the US and have been paying for Nationwide (used to be VPI) insurance this past year. I recently took my rabbit to the vet to get a physical, and she said she wanted to see him again in 6 months because he has a “mild” case of spikes growing towards his tongue. Nationwide does not cover teeth filing, and the vet told me the price can range anywhere form $350-$8,600! I have never heard of teeth filing costing over 8k; I thought it would cost more around 1-2k. Are these numbers pretty accurate? Is Nationwide still the only insurance company available for exotic pets? I am located in Arizona if that helps.

Also, has anyone been told their rabbit has a mild case starting to form and was able to reverse it with different preventative care methods?

        Thank you in advance!!

8K does sound ridiculously steep! I would guess it is expensive since they have to put the bun under for the filing, but still! Do you have any other rabbit savvy vets in the area? It might be worth getting a second opinion.

For pet insurance, unfortunately I think Nationwide is the only one that covers rabbits in the US. I’ve looked into other companies and found nothing so far, anyone else know of another one?

I don’t have a dental bun, but I was told by my vet that increased hay intake can often stave off or prevent tooth problems (Thor is a lop, so more prone to dental issues). Trying to get him to eat more hay is never a bad thing! It can help to increase the variety, for instance, we have timmothy hay that we supplement with orchard and oat hays.

Adding that tooth spurs are definitely something to keep an eye on! You can monitor his eating, as dental problems can lead to GI stasis if the bun stops eating from pain. As long as he is behaving normally it is probably ok to wait and see what your vet says in a few months.

I’m in the UK where its much easier to insure rabbits and even here insurance wont cover dentals. I have a bun with spurs, increasing hay intake is the only thing that helps really. You might find you need to get them done every so often though even with increased intake – we are at one full year since bramble’s last dental though! We get his teeth checked every three months and yes sometimes they do say that the spurs are starting but don’t need done as yet, this is what we have been told at our last two appointments so I take that to mean that they haven’t gotten any worse in between those two appointments.

It can be really dangerous though because buns with teeth trouble can go into stasis really quickly. Bramble has been in stasis a few times and the issue has always been his teeth. unfortunately because they hide pain well, we usually don’t know anything is wrong until he stops eating then we need to rush him to the animal hospital.
