I just adopted my rabbit from the shelter about a week ago. Her cage at the shelter had a water bottle but ever since I brought her home she will only drink from the bowl.  I didn’t start her off in the bowl though. I had a water bottle and she drank almost no water the very first evening I had her. So I was concerned that she wouldn’t drink the whole 8 hours I was at work the next day so I put some water in a bowl and she hasn’t had a drop of water from the bottle since.  I don’t want her to get used to drinking from the bowl because the bottle holds a lot more water than the bowl will and since I am at work I have no way of giving her water throughout the day.

Does it look like the water bottle is placed at a comfortable height? It’s actually a good idea to keep both a water bottle and a bowl in her cage. The bottle will be there in case she spills the bowl, and the bowl will be there in case the bottle sipper gets stuck. Will a larger bowl fit in her cage?

Water bottles take more effort to drink out of than the bowl, which is probably why your rabbit may be staving off on drinking from the bottle. Is the ball in the bottle easy to push? I know some are a bit tougher than others, which makes it even more unattractive to get water from. I’d recommend putting out multiple bowls of water then. They are relatively cheap at pet stores, or you can use human bowls with a low lip too.

I put it at what looks to be a comfortable height. It isn’t that high and she doesn’t need to scrunch her neck to get to it. and the water bowl isnt super small, i would just feel more comfortable with her drinking out of the water bottle.  I don’t want to take the dish away because I don’t want her to drink nothing at all.  Could it have anything to do with my last rabbit using it?

If you washed the bottle, then your last bun’s scent shouldn’t be on it so I don’t think it would affect her. Luna goes back and forth between bottles and bowls. She’ll use a bottle for a few months, then she’ll ignore the bottle and only use the bowl for awhile. Maybe you could try moving the bottle to a different spot in the cage? Some buns like their water by their food, some buns like it away from their food, other want it in the left corner instead of the right, etc.

I think a bowl filled with water is more comfortable than a water bottle. Rabbit does not have to make efforts while drinking. Try the method and see if she is comfortable with it or not.

Just use more than one bowl?
