Hi all! Im about to start clicker training my bunny! Im really excited a little bit about my bunny. Shes slow when it comes to anything it takes her time to get used to things shes very timid but once she feels confident shes a ball of hyper and joy. She can tolerate pets and she nudges me sometimes for nose rubs kinda rarely but thats ok. I havnt introduced her to fruit yet as she is 13 weeks old and im not sure since she used to be considered a baby only two weeks ago if itd be smart to with a delicate digestive system. She loves food and she loves exploring. Now i wanted to give that background so you know what my bunny is like.
So heres my goals. I would like to eventually train her to. Follow me, go into her crate on command, go into her carrier on command, sit on my lap, stand on her hind feet, and maybe jump in the air on command. Now im not expecting her to magically learn all of this within a few weeks im expecting more like a few years. I think itll be great bonding experience.

So my question is what were some useful tactics you used yourself? Any treats you recommend? Thanks all!

If she’s not really getting any treats yet and she loves her pellets, you can use the pellets for clicker training before you feed them for the day. If you train right before breakfast she will be very food motivated, although she may be too excited to focus as well. In the past, I’ve used pellets and also tiny pieces of dried fruit, however you really have to be careful using fruit as a treat due to all the sugar. Some people use a lettuce leaf or similar, and bunny gets to take a bite of the leaf after the click.

Training starts with a really solid foundation, so really reinforce first up that click means treat. After that, I would start with the easiest trick, such as standing on hind legs which is easily trained by luring with the treat. The same with following and going into certain places, can all be used by luring. Depending on what technique you’re using, some people use a target stick to help make training easier. Jump in the air is a more difficult trick that I would train after she has a good grasp of the training and had learned how to progress through training. I would think you will have to train that by simply waiting for her to jump or binky and being ready to click when she does. Then you have to wait for her to jump again and eventually she’ll catch on.

Apollo and Luna aren’t trained, except for the sound of crinkling plastic which often means treats or pellets. My previous bun Bandit knew “bedtime” (go in your cage, though he didn’t always want to listen), “spin” (circle right), “twirl” (circle left), and “up” (stand up).
