Hi guys my first post here, I have a four month old Dutch rabbit called Barnaby he’s such a lovely little boy but we are having a few issues, he’s let out most of the day and has our living room to roam around in but he’s started biting the carpet ,we’ve made him a digging box he has a variety of toys that I change daily but he’s just not interested and continues to bite the carpet. Also he has a very large cage that he sleeps in at night but he’s begun biting the bars I put some toys in his bed at night time just in case he is bored but I’m at a loss do you think I need to get him neutered? It’s not practical for me to get another rabbit at this moment in time but it’s something I can consider in the future. Look forward to hearing you’re responses

Thanks from one very stressed out mum!

Definitely get him neutered. Not only to help the digging but it may stop him from getting in the habit of spraying pee.

My rabbit love apple wood chews. If he is chewing on something he isn’t supposed to I give him one.

We have old carpet and my rabbit fount some loose ends and started pulling them up. We put a cardboard box over the spot on the carpet and
Left it there for a few weeks. He seems to have forgotten about it at least for now.

My rabbit is about the same age as yours. I am hoping as he gets older he won’t be quite so busy destroying

My neutered Avalon and spayed Morgana still chew carpet – so I have to cover it up. Many times, giving them different toys and neutering will help. But rabbits are by nature – chewers and diggers. It is instinct for them. So it may be that you just have to restrict his access to carpet. Throw a towel/blanket over. I have resorted to sheets of plywood… That’s how bad my two chewers/diggers are. But you never know – maybe after neutering, some different toys might help. Does he have a blanket/towel to toss around? Try that. Does he have a dig box? You could give him a telephone book to shred, a cardboard box to shred, a plastic bin or cardboard box with sand or shredded/crumpled newspaper or that brown packaging paper?
Neutering will help the spraying for sure. My first male Merlin would spray me all the way up to my hips. Yuck. He sprayed everything he could – walls, me, Guinevere, you name it. Neutering will help that for sure.

I don’t think neutering will help with the digging behaviour – as Vanessa said, bunnies are natural diggers My boy is quite a digging fiend. He digs at his blankets, my feet, Buttercup’s bum sometimes  He’s been neutered since December. My girl likes digging at blankets and my pj bottoms. She was spayed in December too.

Thank you for everyone’s reply, luckily we’ve not had any spraying of wee! Fingers crossed my other bunny I had angora/lion head cross didn’t either but he was a bit of a confused diva rabbit! I’ve never had a Dutch before so it makes life interesting, yes got him a digging box and have now laid a picnic mat on the floor which he tried to get under but hopefully he’s getting the picture you can not scratch and chew the carpet, think I’ll try the phone book that sounds like it could be fun!
