Hello all. I got one of those large hay tunnels for my bunnies and they went absolutely crazy for it, it provided weeks of chewing entertainment! But now they’ve worn down the edges of the tunnel and started tearing off strips of the hay paper, and I’m wondering if it’s still safe for them to play with? I’ve taken it away for the time being as I was worrying about them swallowing too much paper, but it would be a shame to just throw it out now as there’s still a lot of chewing material on it. Have any of you had one of these tunnels for your buns, and did you let them tear off every last shred of paper or did you take it away before then?

I’m not sure what you mean, is it made of hay, or is it made of paper? If it’s hay they can obviously eat it no problems, but eating too much paper can certainly lead to blockages in the gut, a small amount here and there isn’t an issue though. Without being able to see it, I say it sounds safe, but if you’re concerned, remove it and only add it back in to their area for an hour or so of supervised play once a day.

The tube itself is made of very thick card with a paper lining on the inside and outside which is coated with hay. And yes, good idea, I’ll just bring it out as a special guest toy while I can keep an eye on them!
