My bun is about 5 months old. She recently grew in what I’m assuming is her thick adult coat. I just noticed that she has 2 patches of short velvet fur in front of her ears. There is no crustiness, scales, or irritation, and she isn’t itching it. Is this normal for a young rabbit, or is it something I should keep my eye on? She’s my first bunny and I don’t want to pass anything off as normal if it could be a problem. Any advise or ideas? Thank you!

I can’t get it to upload. I’m not sure how else to do it. It’s within size limits. The pictures are in my attachments, but they just won’t attach to the thread.

Hi Tabitha, I’ve just gone in to try and edit your post to see if I can add the image without any luck. Sometimes symbols in a file name can cause issues so it might be worth renaming the image and leaving out the underscore.

It’s tough to say regarding the fur without actually seeing it, it could just be with her moult that the longer fur hasn’t grown in yet or she just naturally has shorter fur there.

Thank you Azerane! I tried uploading it from a desktop instead of my phone. It’s showing up on the thread now, so hopefully it’s working right for you guys.
So, in the photo, I kind of brushed the longer fur away to show the patches better. When her ears are forward and the fur is in its normal state, the spots are really difficult to see.

so the hair is short enough where you can see skin? i would have said it was shed lines but it looks a little weird

Here’s one that shows the patch a little better. The skin doesn’t show any more than anywhere else on her body. There’s no separation between the short and normal length fur- no ring or redness. Just soft, short fur. It was never bald either. I’m not sure how this happened.
This second picture is from 22 April. So, a little more than a month ago she had a full head of hair. lol

Maybe just molting and hers is just coming out funny? Sorry,  Almost everything I have learned about house rabbits has been since  I got her. Before, all I knew was rabbits that were bred for show and kept outside in small hutches. I never knew that they could be sweet, intelligent, playful, and affectionate house pets like a cat or dog. So, I’ve done a tooooon of research and digging, but I’m assuming that I will learn a lot as I go too. It has been amazing so far!

I think it’s could very well be just molting. It reminds me of how my bun Yohio used to look when he was molting. He had similar markings to your bun, only he was yellow and gray instead of white and gray.

Hairloss for a “bad” reason such as mites or a fungal infection tends to involve scabs and dandruff/flakiness.

After a few days, the patches of short hair are getting larger and the longer (juvenile) hair is coming out. Its looking like shes just going to have thicker, short hair as her adult coat. Thank you, guys!

They can shed off the long hair first, Yohio did that, and for a (short) while he had this really beautiful short apricot fur. And then the long hairs grew out and he was back to “normal” again. I know I have a picture somewhere, will try to find.

ETA: Here he is, in mid-molt, the dark hair on his back is short new fur, the fur on his sides is about to be shed.

That looks very similar. He’s beautiful, Bam. I like the two-toned thing he has going on there!
