› FORUM › DIET & CARE › Baytril attempt ends in tears! Help!
I tried to give Casper his Baytril from the syringe and it did not work! So I mixed it with what I thought was a tiny bit of orange jjuice in a dish! Casper only tasted it then tried to throw the little dish (but I caught it!).
So I tried the burrito again (I’ve been just giving him his eye drops while he sits and eats a bit of basil because he is happiest this way) omg and it was awful. He really HATES it! I tried about 8 times! And actually I used to much orange juice because it was at least 1.2ml of orange juice and he only gets 0.3 ml of Baytril (I’m an idiot!)
I tried holding him in burrito, I tried sitting him on bed, I tried it on suitcase (not willing to try high worktop!) he just riggles out or tries biting the towel like mad! I tried covering his eyes and managed to get 0.2ml in and that was it!! I tried again and he was sniffing at me and looked really scared so when he escaped I gave up!
I’m SO upset. And so is Casper. I only have FIVE doses to give him! I really want him to get better! :'( what do!? There is nobody who can help me I am on my own!
Baytril administration can be very stressful, and you’re not alone! It’s not a very good medicine, so naturally rabbits are squeamish. I gave Wick Baytril for 3 months, twice a day.
I sat on the floor, feet under bottom style, and put Wick in front of me, so his bottom was against my knees. This prevents him from going backwards. I get a gentle grip on his neck area (not choking, but between the jaw bone and shoulder bones). This will do a good job minimizing squirming and forward jumps. Don’t expect the rabbit to be 100% still and don’t force the rabbit to be that way, or it may hurt the rabbit. I use my other hand to get the syringe gently towards the mouth. I usually touch the syringe to the front teeth, then gently slide it over to get the teeth gap. I depress the plunger steadily and pet vigorously once it’s done. I always followed up anitbiotic doses with Wick’s feeding time, so there’s a good association.

Baytril tastes terrible. Bunnies hate it. Try apple juice? How r u holding him? Upright? Tilted? On his back?
Thanks for the replies
3 months twice a day! You must be an expert! I wish your lived in Scotland!
I tried holding him lots of ways, but I didn’t try the kneeling on the ground I’ll try that tomorrow!
I wouldn’t put him on his back, I don’t know what I’m doing + he is quite a nervous rabbit and wouldn’t he drown!?
I’m almost glad I’m boarding him in 2 days and they will do it while I’m away! Although I will need to learn as he probably had Pastuerella and this could be a long term thing
I kind of wish they’d given me injections instead! I had to inject a rabbit before and it was easier than this! But Casper is only a baby, he really hates being held or picked up.
How can I burrito him though if he eats the towel? It’s frantic! I’m getting into a state because I feel like I’m being cruel!
I had orange juice but yeah I could try apple juice. Maybe tomorrow I’ll get banana and strawberry and drown them in sticky orange juice Baytril sauce!! Too much sugar? :/
I have put baytril in a slice if banana before.
Sounds like plan I’ll try that tomorrow!
Do you think even if he only got a little bit of the medicine it might still help a bit or
not really ![]()
No he needs the full dose.
Has Floppy been introduced to veggies yet? There was a post awhile back where someone suggested injecting the meds into the hollow part of the stem of a leafy green and then feed the veggie to him.
Maybe try mashing banana up in the syringe and adding the medicine? And, if you have to fight him to get the medicine, it’s better that he’s super upset and angry with the medicine in his belly than content and purring while still really sick, right? I’d just keep trying and if you can’t get the full dose down (which I really recommend, he’s gotta get the full dose) I think it’s better than nothing if you get most of it.
Have you tried sitting on him? I do that with Wooly.
He’s had some herbs & romaine lettuce, but I don’t have any needles. I’m going to try it with banana tonight. Thanks everyone for all the support, it really helps.
There is a remarkable difference in Casper’s behaviour today! He is still sneezing just the same, but he’s been playing, running about, lots of binkies! This is the most active I have seen him in about 2 weeks! Can the Baytril start working this quickly?
If he’s on the mend, it’s so totally worth it!
will where you are boarding him take him if he is unwell? Banana usually works well for us when we need to give bramble meds, I just mash the meds with the banana in a little dish and leave it for him – he usually eats it but sometimes we do need to syringe feed, definitely worth a try though
Yeah I told them everything. Only difference is he won’t be allowed in the ‘hop zone’ in which the rabbits take turns to play ![]()
I’v seen improvement from baytril in 3 days…
Baytril did only a tad bit after 2w. It wasn’t until Wick received injections as well that there was a drastic improvement.
