Hey everyone. I recently noticed that mice have gotten into my outdoor bunnies hutch. I’ve brought him inside for the time being and I was just wondering if there is anything I could do to try and prevent them coming into the house. To maybe prevent the smell of rabbit, food & waste from attracting them inside?? Like maybe changing his food, or litter bedding. Would that work? One of my parents has a phobia of mice, and if they see a sign a mouse has been in the house they will make him go back outside as we had a problem with mice in the house earlier this year ? – any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

If you had a mice problem in the house before when your rabbit was outside then your bunny isn’t the problem. Do you live in the countryside?

Oh no, I wasn’t blaming the bunny. There could’ve been many reasons why we got mice, just wondering of ways we could prevent it (just in case) so they wouldn’t be attracted by the smell of him inside. – We got rid of the mice eventually, I just don’t want them to come back. Yes, I live in the countryside.

I know you wasn’t blaming the bunny but I don’t understand why your mum would make the bunny live outside when clearly the bun isn’t the cause of the mice problem.

I don’t know how you could stop them coming in if you live in the country. Aside from inhumane traps. I wonder if mouse repellent exists?

I know, I don’t get it either. I think it’s mainly from past experience, because she used to have rabbits when she was younger and they must of attracted mice, so she believes that mine will do the same. The thing she doesn’t understand is that being in the country we will probably get them often with or without a bun. Actually, you just reminded me! When we realised we had mice, we covered/sealed/blocked any entrance way into the house they could be using, we then realised that we must’ve trapped the remaining mice in the house so they couldn’t get out the way they came in so we set traps to get rid of them. Anyway, since then we keep the traps live at all time just in case and they have peanut butter in them… wouldn’t the smell of peanut butter attract them in, if any thing?? Because I thought his hay or pellets could potentially lure them in..So the fact that they haven’t been for the food in the traps since is a positive cause we haven’t caught one in ages! So hopefully they can’t get in anymore. Hmm, I suppose we’re being very over precautious.. uh, it was so horrible though when we had them, there was poo everywhere.. We just need to keep an eye on any signs that they may be in. But I don’t think, if they ever did, they’ll come back because of him now that I’Ve thought about it.
Hm, i have heard of those sonic mouse repellents?, but I’d need to make sure they don’t affect buns!
                – sorry for the massive reply

I wouldn’t worry too much about the hay, I think pellets and vegetables would be the main draw. How much pellets do you give him a day? If possible, you could give him the same amount but in many small portions. This way, he will eat them all at once and no pellets will be left out for mice to possibly get into.

If they are not being caught in traps I would assume that there aren’t any in your house right now… In my experience with mice, peanut butter is an irresistible treat!

I’m not sure about sonic mouse repellents, but my grandparents once installed a sonic squirrel repellent (same thing?). They couldn’t hear it, but it ended up being a young person repellent, I couldn’t stand the noise! So a rabbit would probably be very sensitive to a sound repellent as well.

That makes so much sense, thank you! He doesn’t have too much pellets during the day, I do like the idea of giving him them in small portions so they’re not available all the time. When he was outside in the hutch he had just continued access to them, and at first mice would just come at night to steal his food, then they started coming back during the day too!! Mice make an absolute mess, food crumbs everywhere, poo everywhere, paper everywhere! Cheeky little things. Hmm I think I’ll give those sound repellents a miss then ha!
