I usually line Olaf’s litter box with a paper towel before adding the fresh wood pellets. Is there actually any benefit (or downside) to this? I can’t tell if makes absorption better or worse. It definitely helps with cleaning because the wet litter residue comes out on the paper towel, rather than stuck to the bottom of the pan, but I didn’t know if any of you use a liner or not? Newspaper? His box has been a little more pungent than usual with spring crazies (he is fixed, don’t worry) but I thought I might get some tips in case I’ve been doing it wrong all along.

I use a corner box with a grid. Folded paper towel in the bottom, three scoops of Aspen Supreme and I always clean with white vinegar.

I line one of the 4 current litter boxes with a puppy pee pad. It does make it easier to keep the litter box clean from wet litter residue. But only the boxes that have a grate. Otherwise my bunnies pull up the pee pad and chew it… I haven’t tried paper towel. The other benefit of using puppy pee pads, is I can lift the pee par out by the corners, and it makes it that much easier to dump the mess. In the unlined boxes, I use a scoop to get the soiled litter/hay out.

That’s a smart idea, thank you. How long do the puppy pads usually last and/or how long do you go between changes? I used to clean it out every two days but I’ve started doing it every other day since it’s gotten warmer. Thanks!

I put folded layers of newspaper under Luna’s litter and it seems to help draw the urine down towards/into the newspaper, which seems to help keep the surrounding unspoiled litter from soaking up the urine in the spoiled litter.

It’s the amount of litter that determines how long. Per bunny, 1 scoop of wood pellets lasts one day. So for Guin, I can put 1 scoop in each of her 3 litter boxes, and change them every 3 days. But she only uses 2 of the , although if the third one weren’t there – she would use that spot! So… For the two that she uses, 1 scoop per box and I change them every second day. And she doesn’t have volumes or stinky pee. Morgana and Avalon have 1 litterbox, and his pee stinks and there is a lot of it. So they get 5 scoops for 2 days. The pee pads do help reduce the odor, and make cleaning the whole mess easier, but don’t extend the time that I change the litter. I dont’ use pee pads for Avalon/Morgana coz they woudl chew them, and they break the grates to get to the pee pads.

The other thing about the pee pads, is it really is still important to use the right amount of litter, becauase the pee pads can only absorb so much liquid – and then they become too disgusting to touch. So they are useful to keep the litter box cleaner from the wet litter, but you still need the right amount of litter, and if you want to go longer between changes, you’ll still need to add more litter.

Chewie has a large cat litterbox. Nowadays, I use 1 puppy pee pad in the smallest size I can find, followed by two folded sheets of newspaper, and then topped off with not-so-nice hay on half the length and yummy soft hay with dried flowers on the other half. Seems to work for the wookie.

                      Thank you both so much!

I will definitely try them, vanessa. Good to know that they work well but have limitations. I’ll try to keep an eye on it for a day or two to see how much they absorb. I love that Guin won’t use the last box unless it’s not there — such like a rabbit to be so fickle!

I appreciate the extra tips, Q8. I didn’t think to use the pads and another layer of newspaper, that will probably add extra protection.

                      Merci!
