Hello everyone! I have a two month old rabbit and have not had him for very long. In this short while of having him however, I’ve noticed that he drinks a kind of worrying amount of water… I could just be worrying too much as I love him and don’t want anything to be wrong.. but i noticed he seems to drink a lot so I looked up the “normal” amount, and compared it with the amount he drinks… I was alarmed to see what could be quite a big difference… A four pound rabbit should drink approximately a cup of water a day, maybe less, and my rabbit, who possibly isn’t even a pound yet, seems to drink approximately a cup a day, therefore he seems to be drinking about four times the recommended amount.

When I did search about this, I found a few places talking about excessive water consumption and they all seemed to mention a possible cause could be anything like kidney problems/failure, diabetes, etc. I’m so very worried and I just want him to be okay. I know I should contact a vet but I kind of have to put that to last resort… because that has to be the last thing I try about this issue, i figure I’d ask everyone here about their opinions/thoughts on the matter. By the way, he does seem to have normal poops and seems to eat a good amount of food and some hay. He does urinate frequently, as expected to happen with the excessive water consumption though… I do supply veggies so he gets water from those as well… not too many vegetables of course though as I know baby bunnies tend to have more sensitive stomachs. He seems to act alright, perhaps not very energetic… but I figure since he’s a baby maybe he just likes naps and feels safer in his cage or something… (if someone has another, possibly more serious theory on that behavior please, please let me know). I do have another rabbit (she is older so they are separated till he is older and I can try to bond them, but they seem to be alright together through the bars of his cage) but she never gave me troubles like this. She ate good, drank fine, was active, etc. and I’ve had her since she was about two months like him. She is about two and a half years now though.

Anyways, I’m sorry for going on and on, I’m just a worried rabbit mom and want to make sure he is okay. I appreciate all the responses I hope to get helping me. Thank you all.

It’s common for baby buns to drink a LOT of water. Mine would drink for 2-3 minutes straight when he was little. I don’t remember when he stopped doing that, but vet told me it was normal. Anyways, if you’re worried you could ask the vet over the phone (or bring the bun in for a checkup if he hasn’t already gotten one!)

My 3.5 month old teen drinks water every time like hes never had water before in his life for 2-3 minutes and its very loud and slurpy. They wont over indulge and drink because their thirsty most bunnies know what they need.

I also have a young bunny, a little Angora – he’s 14 weeks today, who also has excessive water. Teddy is only 1kg and should therefore drink between 50-150mls of water. Instead he drinks around 300mls which is double the intake. He also eats and poops normally. However he has recently been diagnosed as having EC. So he’s now on medication for it (a 28 day regime). Our little guy is also a quiet bunny. When he’s out in the backyard, he does run around more than what he does when he’s inside. I figure it’s more stimulating for him out there. Our weather is wet here at the moment so he’s been inside for nearly a whole week now and I don’t see him getting much outside time for a few days yet. But when he’s inside, there’s just lots of napping, eating, flops. My concern with Teddy is that he seems to shake a lot. It’s like his heart rate is so fast that it shakes his whole body – it is quite concerning. We have a vet appointment for this Wednesday when he has to get his booster vaccination shot, so I’ll be showing her the video we took of Teddy shaking to see what she says.

I would suggest considering getting your bunny tested for EC since you won’t want to bond him just yet with your girl if he’s positive – you’ll want him on the medication first up and to wait for this period to elapse before attempting to bond since you don’t want him passing the spores to her. Excessive water consumption is one of the (many) signs of having EC.
