I’ve had my Holland Lop for 7 years now. He has always molted twice a year, end of January and July on the dot. He’ll get a little lazy during that time, but nothing serious. This year he molted late, end of February-March. It was a very long molt. We’ve had weird weather here in Florida and had NO winter so I just thought it had to do with that. I left for vacation last weekend and the night before I left I noticed he had some clumps of hair sticking up on his lower back, like he does when he molts. I started plucking them, and it just kept coming. After several minutes of this, I brushed his hair forward and he had an almost bald spot about the size of a golf ball. It still had very short, new hair growing in it, but he had never done this before. I was gone for a week and my parents watched him for me. They said he really slowed down on his eating and drinking and was not moving around much. He’s doing a little better now, but when I came home today he just looked really rough. His coat looks horrible, I’ve never seen him molt this bad before. There is no redness or irritation anywhere, and he’s not scratching. Still not eating and drinking as much as usual. He’s definitely not acting like himself. My mom said she brushed him twice a day everyday while I was gone and it’s still coming. There are no vets in my area that work with rabbits. We had to literally beg our dog/cat vet to put our other rabbit down a few months ago when he had a bad stroke. And with my HL being older, I’m not really sure what to do. Is this something that happens when they get older and could be a sign of him going downhill? Could it be from the wacky weather? Like I said, I’ve had him since he was 4 months old and he’s never looked this rough or slowed down eating this much before.

Decreased eating/activity during molt could be just because he is molting, or it could be that he has ingested too much fur. Is he still pooping? I know there is something you can give buns to help with digestion during molt (besides hay), but I can’t remember what it is. I think Bam or Muchelle mentioned it in a post before?
