My rabbit is 8 months old and I just got him neutered on the 12th of May. He behaved the first two days as I would expect so. I gave him his medicine every 8 hours and he had eaten and drank enough water to use the bathroom a couple of times. However today is day three and he is still acting kind of sad. He has just been laying in a corner not responding to much and I am so worried… I was told to wait three days before I could let him into a more open space but now that I have extended his living area, he wont get out of it! He has just been sitting up in a corner and then lying back down. I also have checked the area where he got his surgery several times and all seems well to me. Is this normal behavior? Should I still give him a little more time to open back up since he might still be in pain?

He could be in pain, or it might be g.i. stasis. Has he eaten today? How often has he been pooping? If he is neither eating nor pooping, I would call your vet.

If your giving him pain meds he might just be in general pain. Which is off cause most boys bounce back in a few days, I know when I got bandit snipped I restricted his movement for the first 3-4 hours and then he started shaking his door and wanted to come out. I let him out with extreme supervision and he just decided to lay on a towel and wanted to be social is all. As long as he’s eating and potting then there should be no cause for alarm. If hes staying in the same spot and looks uncomfortable he might have gas, just be vigilant.

How’s his input (food) and output (poop)? I believe pain meds can suppress an appetite.

Pain meds can indeed sometimes suppress appetite. What does his belly sound like? Do you have unflavored liquid baby simethicone?

Thank you to everyone who responded. I decided to take him to the vet because I was so horrified of what might happen to my baby. Sadly my Bun did not make it. I have never experienced the loss of something I loved sooo much and I can honestly say that I have never felt an emotion like the one I am going through. I regret taking him to the vet, and I feel like this is all my fault. I loved him more than anything, and the only reason I took to get neutered to begin with was because supposedly all the benefits were amazing but if I would’ve known he would died from it I would’ve never taken him. The vet I took him to even told me that they had never had a rabbit pass from the procedure, and knowing that my rabbit was the “first” makes me question if they were lying to me, but this also makes me so upset. I at least find minimal comfort in knowing that he is no longer in pain, but I’m not sure this hole in my heart will be filled anytime soon.

I’m so very sorry. I know the exact pain you are going through. I lost a very beloved bunny during a dental trim. The horrible feeling of loss and the guilt. There is no worse pain than having to say goodbye to someone you love. The pain will go away but it does take time. And, in case you need to hear someone else say it, you were absolutely doing what was best for him. Sometimes things like this happen that are out of our control. I’m very sad for you as I know how much it hurts.

I’m sorry. One of the worst things is to lose a pet while you are trying to help them. It is rare these days to lose a pet during a medical procedure. Anything that requires anesthesia is a risk, and the smaller the animal, the larger the risk – but the risk is much smaller today than it used to be. It sucks that it was your bunny to be that exception. Perhaps after some time, you will feel ready to adopt a bunny. Maybe after this experience you woudl prefer an intact male or an already spayed felame? Or an already neutered male? I’m really sorry. It sucks feeling regret – there isn’t a whole lot that can fix that pain in a hurry. Binky free litle bunny.

First off its not your fault, you were attempting to help in the long run. As bunnies get older the risk of complications increases and even under a year that is SUPER RARE that something went wrong.
