Hi, so I recently adopted a 3 and a half neutered female rex bunny and I let her out do her cage in my room just to look around and I put my hand out and she starts jumping my arm and scratching her paws around my arm like I’m a scratch post. She loves to dig so that’s what I was thinking but what should I do?

Hmmmm, how are you holding out your hand? Depending on the angle, sometimes rabbits can feel threatened. I’ve found the best way is “ask” to pet them by placing your hand in front of them on the ground, with the back of your hand facing them. If they put their head down, they are saying “ok, yes please pet me”.

Sometimes palm up can be threatening. Does she only do this when out playing, or in her cage/pen also? I had an un-neutered rabbit once that would do this, but only in his cage when he felt threatened.

This is bunny boxing, it’s a sign of ‘go away I’m busy’ there is also a right and wrong way to approach your rabbit, don’t make quick movements towards them and never approach from the front, you can make her feel safe with your hand by offering treats or pellets so she knows the hand is ok
