I know meds like diazepam have been used to help control seizures in rabbits. Also, an anti-inflammatory might be helpful depending on the cause of them. 

You could ask to have him treated for e cuniculi. It’s a parasite mentioned in the pdf Jersey links to. It causes neurological problems. Treatment isn’t risky or expensive, it’s consists of 28 days of a dewormer (Panacur) containing the active ingredient fenbendazole. There are tests available for e cuniculi, but they are notoriously unreliable and often give false negatives. The panacur treatment can be given together with Baytril (antibiotic) and/or metacam (an antiinflammatory). Has an ear infection been ruled out as a cause of the seizures?

Diazepam (valium) helps control acute seizures but it’s not a cure, as I’m sure you are aware.

And I’ll throw the disheartening army opinion out there.

If after the above treatments mentioned by leadership don’t work and you see your bunny getting worse you have to consider the responsible option of possibly having to put your bunny to rest. But only consider this if your vet reccomends it and has no other options avaliable and all other options have been exhausted. It is better to take the hard road than be cruel to someone you love but that is always your choice.

Oops. Valium = diazepam. I never remember that!

I’m not an expert on rabbit medicine, but diazepam is often used to stop a seizure in humans, its not actually treating anything as such. For example someone with epilepsy will take an anti epileptic medication daily to control seizures but may still have some, if they do someone might give them diazepam to stop the seizure. I guess what I am saying is you need to find and treat the cause of the seizures before you are likely to see improvement. I would definitely treat for EC in the first instance. His delayed response time post-seizure sounds a lot like the post ictal phase we see in humans, I assume it is similar in rabbits since so much of our medicine is the same as theirs, its actually part of the seizure. Hi! My rabbit Nibbles has seizures also. Hers tend to be partial seizures that last under a minute and it takes her about three minutes to recover. She is being successfully treated with phenobarbital and rarely has seizures any more. Before taking the med, she was having a couple a week and a horrible day she she had cluster seizures with one every couple of hours.

Before starting phenobarbital we took her for a consult with a veterinary neurologist who agreed with our vet with using phenobarbital over other med’s. They felt it was best since it is what is typically used to treat cats and dogs with seizures. It will cause weight gain and the dosage will need to be adjusted accordingly. Nibbles also goes in every couple months to have her liver enzyme levels checked.

The vet doesn’t know what underlying cause of her seizures is but suspects it is damage from an EC infection, so, as suggested by others, treatment for that would be good.

I can let you know the dosage Nibbles gets if that would be helpful.
