  Hi!
  I’m so nervous, my rabbit is getting spayed today. I’m having a local clinic do it, they are experienced. They do rabbits for my local rabbit rescue. They give metacam for pain. They seem to know what they’re talking about. 2% of rescue rabbits have died from surgery. I’m just so nervous. Please pray for Daisy. Love her so much, couldn’t stand to lose her. She’s 1 years old. I’m new to the forum, if I could figure out how to post pics of her, I would ? I’ll let everyone know how it goes. Thanks for reading ?

  I just got the call, the vet said she’s fine! I’m allowed to pick her up in an hour. Hopefully all goes well when she’s home.

  I brought her home, she is just laying in her litter pan, she hasn’t eaten at all. When can I expect her to start eating and when should I be concerned?

  She will be less active for awhile. Make sure she can reach her water and hay easily. Also, check her ears to see if they feel warm – pain meds contribute to lower body temperature so it’s important that she stay warm but able to move away from the warmth (ie, hot water bottle or blanket) if she wants to. Offer her veggies drenched in water to entice her to eat. She needs to eat something today, even if it is just a few nibbles here and there. Some buns recover quicker than others, but in either case it will be at least another day or two before she starts eating more normally.

  Don’t go to bed for the night until she has eaten something. It’s rather common for newly spayed girls to not want to eat of their own, so you might have to syringe feed her. Critical Care is a nutritious powder you mix with water and feed in a syringe, if you can’t get that, use pellets soaked in water.
  
  It’s very important that she keeps warm. Bunnies can get cold after anesthesia, and that’s very dangerous. You can give her a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel or hand warmers, but she must have space enough to move away from the heat source if she doesn’t want it.
  
  Fresh leafy greens like parsley, cilantro, mint or dandelion greens can often entice a bunny to start eating.

  I mean, I don’t really know what’s normal after spaying a rabbit (she’s my first rabbit) she’s just been sleeping and not moving. Sometimes she sits up but then I’ll go to see if she wants to eat and she just lays back down. So I guess I could say she’s pretty out of it. I’m pretty upset because the vet/ clinic place said if anything is wrong call my vet. I’ve never taken her to the vet because she’s always just seemed really healthy. So basically I can’t call the vet who did her if there are problems.

  I don’t know, they told me after the spay if she has problems go somewhere else. I didn’t realize she would do this, I’m extremely upset that they would do that. She’s supposed to be a great vet who cares for animals. Doesn’t seem that way to me… I may just need to syringe feed. I have no idea how.

  I’m sorry the vet isn’t being helpful . This may sound silly but place some veggies down right by her face. It might entice her to eat if she literally doesn’t have to move for it. In the meantime, do you have or can you get a needleless syringe? Cut the end of the tip off to make the opening larger so that your critical care can come out easily. If you don’t have critical care, take some greens and mix them in warm water and try to mush everything up into a liquid and put that in the syringe. I’ve never syringe fed Luna the standard way, so hopefully another BB member can provide instruction. Lastly, is there any exotics vet in your area that you could go to if you can’t get her to eat? As long as the vet is experienced with buns, if the vet who performed her spay can’t/won’t see her, then a different experienced vet is the next best thing. Did they tell you to go somewhere else before you brought her home, or did you call and explain she wasn’t eating and they told you to call somewhere else? If not the latter, I would call them and explain what is going on and that you don’t have a vet on record, and ask to see or talk to the vet who performed the spay.

  Daisy has been drinking water. She peed. She finally left her litter pan and walked around and laid down in her cage. I have her a few pieces of papaya treats which she ate. I put veggies by her face. In the morning if she hasn’t eaten I will call the vet.

  So I had to work, but I had my mom come in and check on her. I called the vet who spayed her and said that I don’t know what to do she won’t eat that much. This was before I got home from work. They said give her pineapple if she doesn’t eat by tomorrow bring her in and they’ll give fluids. Thank goodness when I got home though she was taking oxbow pellets from me and nibbling on hay. I also gave her 3 dandelions which she ate. I just put some cilantro in, hoping she will eat. No poop in the cage yet though. Hopefully by tonight there will be some. She looks much better today and is more active. I thankfully won’t need to go to the vet and give her fluids.

  That’s great news . Hopefully you’ll see at least a couple poops tomorrow now that she is eating more.
