I have a Netherland dwarf bunny and his cage is 119cm (46in) long 58cm (22in) wide and 61cm (24in) tall. Is this to small? He gets at least 2 hours out of his cage a day usually more. (Normally 2-4 hours out).

It’s tall enough and wide enough, but ideally it would be better if it was longer (at least 150cm), especially since he doesn’t get a great deal of time outside his cage every day. 4-6 hours outside the cage daily would be better

That’s incredibly small and two hours out is nowhere near adequate.

Would it be better if I added an pen that he could also go in? My pen I have is only 24in high and so I’m scared to leave it up in case he jumps. Should I start taking him out for at least 4 hours? I didn’t know they had to be out for 4-6 I thought it was 2-4.

Also he doesn’t always want to come out of his cage sometimes he wants to stay and rest.

Personally I don’t think 4 hours out is enough. There are 24 hours in a day so 4 hours out means the remaining 20 are spent stuck in a cage. Your rabbit should be out as much as possible.

What time are you allowing your rabbit out? They’re most active early morning and evening so bringing him out during the day is pointless.

How long out of his cage do you recommend? I want him to have a good life and I want to do everything right for him. I normally have been taking him out around 8:00am , 6:00pm and 10:00pm and once in a while around lunch time.

I seriously think that a bun should be out for at least 12 hours. That means they’re in their cage for 50% of the time, and even then you should have a pen attached to the cage.

I would recommend attaching a large Xpen to the cage so that’s where your rabbit can run around while you’re away. Otherwise, I would recommend 4 hours in a bigger space. I know that I cannot devote my entire house to my own rabbit, so when I let him run around, I section off certain areas for his playtime.

My pen I have is only 24in high so I’m scared to leave it out during the night in case he jumps it somehow is there somthing I can put over it? I normally use the pen for playtime but I have an extra room in my house it’s huge I just have to clean it out but I can start using that for playtime instead.

Like i said in your other post a heavy towel or blanket with some heavy duty clothes pins or large metal folder clamps/ zipties over the top will prevent jumping

Hi there. It would be great for your bun to have as much time as you can allow him out. Some have their’s out 24 hours and some have a good quality (playing, stroking, interacting) three hours out. I don’t think it’s really necessary for you to keep him out all overnight because he’s probably sleeping anyway. So don’t worry about keeping him out at night and having to cover the pen over, as I say he’s probably sleeping. As mentioned it would be best for him to be out in the morning, dawn and dusk that’s when they’re the most active and would benefit from being out of cage. As I’m writing (9pm) my two have their gate open and could wander, but they’ve chosen to climb up to their 1st floor and nap!!

So its important you work out when your two are active.
A whoooole room would be THE best

I couldnt agree with sarahthegemini more. My bunnies wake up at 5pm-ish and start going to sleep 8am-ish. Throughout the night, allthough they take short bresks, they r active. I hear them making a ruckous at all hours overnight. When guinivere and lancelot still vidited my bedroom, she would be running and binkying at 2am, 3am, 4am, etc. so i agree that daytime playtime makes no sense.
