I am getting a new hutch and it will be going in my garage as we have a lot of raccoons in my neighborhood and I am too nervous putting it outside.  I have a 10.5 week old female mini rex.  What is something I can put down on the concrete to make it warmer and softer for her? Looking for something super easy to clean that she won’t chew.  I used to have guinea pigs and HATED washing the fleece.  My baby bun is not litter trained. I’m trying but it’s not working lol. Thanks in advance for your help.

Edited to add: would vinyl flooring be a good option? We found it cheap at home depot, it seems like it would be easy to clean and would provide cushion for her little feeties.

Hey there, vinyl flooring is a good, easy to clean, no chew option However being a mini rex, she will need extra padding for her feet, so I would recommend getting some of the foam puzzle mats, and putting those on the concrete, then the vinyl over the top. She will likely also need at least one are in her cage with a soft fleece or similar. Rex breeds often need a variety of soft flooring options to prevent sore hocks which they are quite prone to.

Make sure she doesnt have access to the edges of the vinyl or she’ll be chewing it. (She may chew it anyway, going in from the top but if there are edges for her to get at, it will be guaranteed!! And that’s dangeous….)

My buns house is also on concrete because it’s in my basement. I have the foam puzzle pieces down first, then an indoor outdoor carpet with some texture to it. Over the carpet I put down a fleece blanket and then I put the house on top of it so the edges stick out and he can’t eat them or dig them up.

The puzzle pieces were $10 and I had some left over I use to block areas off in my room. The indoor outdoor carpet I got at lowes for $20 and I cut it down to the size I needed with plenty left over if I expand or need it for somewhere else. I bought his fleece at walmatt, the larger stores have a fabric section and you can buy fleece by the yard for like $3 a yard. In the winter also keep an eye out for the fleece blankets they’re like $2.

I wash his fleece with all the other blankets and towels I use for him once a week. And I can spray his carpet with vinegar, rinse with water and air dry. Foam puzzle pieces I just wipe down with vinegar. It sounds like a lot but it only takes me about 30 minutes to do his full cage clean once a week. During the week I just clean litter boxes every other day and scoop up any excess hay and poops that made their way out of his litter box.
