Hey guys! So I need help knowing when to refill the hay, but not wasting too much.

Yesterday around 12:00 PM, I had refilled the hay. (I am homeschooled.) When it was time for me to *hit they hay* (pun intended), I thought there was enough hay in the litter box. It seemed like a decent amount of hay for the night. I wake up in the morning, she only ate a little bit of it. I hope I didn’t starve her. The funny thing is, she eats much more if I put a lot in the litter box, but won’t eat a lot if it isn’t near full. It is confusing knowing how much to put in there.

I always make sure Luna’s feeder is full when I’m either going to bed or leaving the house. If I’m at home, I don’t worry as much about it, but I do make sure it is at least half full all the time. It’s better that your bun have too much hay available than too little. “Hay all day keeps the stasis away” .

Rabbits are fussy. My pair eat all of their favourite pieces of hay first and then leave the less favourable pieces. If I let it sit, they’ll eventually eat all of it, but if at some point I refill the hay rack, they’ll come running to eat the new “good” pieces of hay. I refill the hay rack quite often. Not to satisfy their need for the yummier bits, but I like that refilling it encourages them to eat more hay, and it’s a good way to test how they’re feeling. If they don’t come running for the fresh hay, there’s something wrong. By refilling the hay rack 4 or so times a day, I can encourage them to eat more hay 4 times a day as part of my routine.

Basically, even if I think there’s enough hay in the rack for the night, or before I’m going out somewhere, I’ll always add a little more, just to encourage them to eat some Plus having too much hay is better than them running out.
