So I know hay should smell sweet and be dry (thought not too brittle), and that’s more important than color, but I can’t seem to get over these small super dark brown strands of hay mixed in with Luna’s bales. I don’t know if it’s a little bit of OCD, or my previous experience with moldy hay, but I just need some advice/reassurance whether anyone else’s bun eats these and is perfectly fine . In the pic below, 80-90% of Luna’s bales look like the green, 10-15% look like the light brown (which I’m totally ok with and feed to Luna), and 5-10% look like that dark brown that I can’t help but pick every single one out of the bales

I’ve seen these tiny dark brown pieces in EVERY bale I’ve ever bought, so it must be normal, right?

Im sure its normal, does Luna eat the dark brown pieces? My hay comes with the tan pieces as well and my bun just ignores them. If she doesnt eat them, im sure its fine that you’re providing hay with those dark pieces.

It’s normal. Hay is a natural product after all and in a grassy field there is bound to be some dead brown grass already when the green grass is cut to turn it to hay.

Mouldy hay usually has black spots.

Paige – Luna doesn’t eat the dark brown, but only because I don’t give it to her. She picks out her fav pieces, but sometimes she goes crazy and indiscriminately grabs a huge mouthful.

Azerane – I thought so, but I needed some reassurance . But wouldn’t it be hard to tell if there are black spots on really dark brown hay? Then again, I wouldn’t think mold would be on random individual pieces in nonconcentrated areas of the bale. I’ll stop obsessing now lol.

Thanks everyone for putting my mind at ease.
