Is the ink on papers from the shredder harmful to use as bedding?

I think it’s fine as long as your bun doesn’t eat the bedding, though I might try shredded newspaper over regular paper with inkjet printer ink on it. The ink used for newspaper is different/better.

How can you tell such a thing? Unless the bun eats a massive amount, how would you know if he was nibbling?

That’s the problem/risk is that if you are not constantly watching your bun, you won’t know for sure. You could place some newspaper on the bottom of the litter box, then put commercial bedding over top of it.
