My rabbit is a 12 year old Rex mix. She has had very severe cataracts for the past few years, hence any strange “whiteness” would go undetected. About a week ago we noticed some drainage coming out of her eye, but not much. Seemingly overnight, the pus was severe. When I dabbed at t with a wet cloth, it also came back bloody. The vet thought she had an ulcer that was infected and we treated it with antibiotics (still treating). The pus immediately cleared up, but an odd beige protrusion had been coming out of her eye. I assumed it was the ulcer closing up and the pus during out. Tonight that protrusion fel out. It is out the size of my fingertip (1/2″ cube), hollow, and hard like an egg shell. Does this seem like a normal way for an ulcer to heal? I can’t imagine the pain of having a giant thing like hat squeeze out of my eye! It’s Saturday night so no vet. He won’t be back until Monday

Oh wow, that’s bizarre. And scary!

At the moment I can only think it could have been an abscess capsule. The body encapsulates abscesses and the outer layer becomes hard like cartilage. Do save it or take photos to show your vet.

How is rabbit acting since this came out?

Also possibly a cyst. And sorry to gross you out here – possible tapeworm cyst? Though I don’t think these are hollow.

This is image of that in the human eye.

Sometime a firm, gelatin-like “plug” will form when the eye is irritated and trying to heal. Wooly has had these before when his third eyelid was irritated. From your description, it’s hard to say if that’s what this was.

I’m not sure what it could be, but if you still have it I would take photos, and also keep it in a bag or jar so that you can take it in to the vet with you on monday.
