There’s a reason your bunnies are active during those hours. Bunnies are Crepuscular, which means most active and alert at dawn and dusk. (Other animals are called Nocturnal – awake at night, and Diurnal – awake all day.) Bunnies are prey animals in their DNA, so they evolved to be eating and playing at those times because the sun is lower in the sky outside. When that happens, it’s harder for the bigger wild animals to see them, and they are much safer.
Our house bunnies still have that programmed into their systems, so as you get up with the dawn, so do they. You may see your bunnies digging around the house. They are foraging. Later, in the early evening, they are ready to come out to play and eat again. They get a deep sleep in midday and again in the middle of the night. So if you work, say, from 9-5, or close to it, don’t worry about leaving your bunny alone. They are getting a good sleep while you’re gone, after having breakfast and playing with you first. They greet you for supper and more play when you get home. Leaving them unlimited hay and water means they can snack now and then when they are awake. They don’t eat everything all at once. They like to graze.
As we know, they are the perfect pet!
