Recently, my bunny, Chewie has been eating from his pellet dish, then suddenly digging at it and flinging pellets everywhere. Is there anyway to help prevent this? Help much appreciated. Thanks!

I just put down a blanket down for the floor of his condo and he gets pellets all over it. He’s a pretty messy bunny

How old is Chewie and is he neutered? Since this is new behavior, I wondered if he is not neutered and entering puberty. That can cause all kinds of changes in behavior. Or have the pellets changed in any way, either a different brand or they changed the formula? That might make him dig at them and throw the bowl. Rabbits do like to dig, though, and others have been known to fling their bowls around. If you get a deeper, heavier dish, you might not have as much of a problem.

Chewie reminds me of Wick, haha. Wick digs at and will physically flip the bowl with his mouth, but this is because he doesn’t like eating out of the small bowl; he has fun going around sniffing for the pellets. He did not always do this; at first, he’d just eat it like normal and shove his face into the bottom, walking in a circle around the bowl to get every pellet. Now he realizes just flinging it in the air and scattering the pieces is more exciting.

For prevention, they sell no-flip bowls. They also sell bowls which attach to cage sides as well. You can also tape the bowl down, or pin it against two or three things to Chewie can’t flip it.

I wouldn’t bother using a bowl, scatter feeding is much more fun especially for an excitable bun!

Thanks for all the responses! Yes, we are planning on neutering him in the next few weeks.
