Try not to feel bad about that Jersey, your mum needs you too (hope things are going as well as they can be there). I’m glad that he is at least eating something, even if it’s minimal. I would suspect that he’ll be alright, just his body being older is probably struggling to produce all the antibodies as quickly as a younger rabbit would. Maybe in future, being a senior bun and indoors, it’s just best to avoid the vaccine for him and he can rely on herd immunity from your other bunnies.

I know everyone seems to be running around like crazy and even the Aus Veterinary Association recommendations have changed to off-label 6 monthly, but I think I’m still going to get my buns done as per the yearly schedule. If cylap protects against the original strain for 12 months, and is shown to protect against K5 (even if the trials were so minimal), I don’t see why it also wouldn’t protect for 12 months.

I agree, completely, Jersey. Vaccinations are among those things that you get more confused about the more you read about it. They do challenge the immune system, that’s how they work. But then there are a lot of myths and misconceptions and lots of conspiracy theories. F ex that mass vaccination of children in the Western world has made cancer later in life more prevalent here. Cancer isn’t more prevalent among old people in the Western world, but we have more old people.

It’s a highly controversial subject and really rather complicated. I worry about Bam because he’s getting old-ish and it’s of course riskier for the elderly. Then again, calici virus will kill a bunny, the amount of virus it takes is very, very small, so I’ve booked him in for his re-vaccination next week.

I just read about vaccination of dogs, some suggest the common vaccines (here distemper, parvo virus, dog hepatitis and if you plan to take your dog abroad, rabies) last a lot longer than previously thought, so you should rather do a blood-test for anti-bodies of these respective diseases than do routine re-vaccination. My guess is that such testing must be very expensive (far more expensive than vaccination), and it’s probably not even available for bunnies.

Most reactions to a vaccine means the body is making antibodies, ie the vaccine has “taken”. A certain percent of vaccinated animals and humans don’t make antibodies after having been vaccinated and thus remain unprotected. So a reaction isn’t all bad, so to speak. What a pretty food bowl!
