I am currently constructing a rabbitat for my two little munchkins to move into when they have finished bonding. The current design has a lower cabinet under the actual living area for hay and litter storage, so the rabbits would need a ramp to get to the floor on their own. The floor of their enclosure is 18 inches off of the ground. I wasn’t sure what sort of angle rabbits could handle, so does a 20 degree incline seem too steep? I was planning on carpeting the ramp so they had better traction. My largest rabbit is a 6-lb mini lop, so I was thinking that an 8 inch wide ramp would give him plenty of space. The last question was should i enclose the ramp with wire mesh so they don’t fall off? 18 inches isn’t really that high, but I was afraid that with two rabbits trying to leave the cage at the same time, there might be safety concerns.

The green and yellow portions are the cabinet space. Their first floor is the top of the yellow section. Interior ramps and the enclosure’s doors and legs are hidden in the model. their ramp would start in the top right corner of the lower level and slant down across the front face of the structure. I would have it end with a small platform (4-6 inches high) that they could easily hop off of.

        Thank you for any advice!

No idea about the ramp question (BB member Azerane or Vienna have built their own so they would likely know), but that 3D model is ridiculously awesome! What software did you use (AutoCad/AutoDesk/Design Review)? How long did it take?

            I agree, cool model

I built my cage without a ramp, I opted to use steps instead. Most ramps in pre-built cages are too steep, but I think 20 degrees would be ok. I would also consider putting a single step in front of where they would jump out though instead of the ramp. Each of my steps are 14 inches square. One of the jumps down/sup is 7 inches, the other jump is 12 inches and they manage it without any trouble providing the floor isn’t slippery under foot.

Very nice. Me? I just copied Azerane’s model !!! LOL !!

Personally I think ramps take up too much space unless the height between levels is really too much and a small bunny might hurt himself but your design shows lots of steps up and down and I think that would be quite sufficient for your bunny to get up to the next level.
I also think its more natural for a bunny to jump onto a horizontal base than slippy slidey up and down ramps (which are fine for piggies or hamsters ). They can also chill in a loaf shape on a step, where as a ramp….? Meh!

I am presuming the front (and sides?) is meshed so there is sufficient light and airflow

Would love to see the finished model.

Thanks! I used Sketchup to make the model, and it took me a couple of days to iron out the design. Still better than buying wood and realizing halfway through a build that I don’t like what I’ve done.

I think I will try setting up some ramps to the couch and see how they handle themselves. I’m not worried about my boy – he likes to launch himself over 3 foot fences regularly. My girl would be the problem. She doesn’t really seem interested in getting up on higher surfaces, so I worried about her having trouble with stairs.

Well, when I said they “built their own” I guess I should have said they built their own hutch which may or may not include ramps .

I used Design Review (AutoDesk variant) for Luna’s cage, then thought “I don’t need to do all that modeling for a hay feeder too”…7 prototypes later, I have a hay feeder lol. If you don’t feel like putting a 3D together for smaller projects, thicker cardboard works nice and cheap as a prototype before you build the real thing.

I have a ramp I made – will measure it and pop a photo up soon

The bigger piece is 48cm and smaller is 28cm
                        Overall height is 24.5cm
                        Width is 22cm

My tiny holland lop can use this no worries ( he is a scaredy cat so it took pellets to train him but now he bunny 500s over it !
