Hello there. I am already a bunny mum since me and my man are having a 2.5 years old lionhead red ruby eyed female bunny. Today we went to the pet shop to buy the regular staff for our bunny and we have seen a velvet black bunny who was into an extremely small cage with cage bars on the bottom. We felt really sad when I saw this bunny and without further thoughts we bought it and now he is in our house. Unfortunately here in my country there are not bunny specialists vets and the only one that is good with bunnies is away for 2 weeks for vacations(since I gave him a call as soon as I got the bunny in order to bring it there for a check up). So we have the velvet black bunny here in my house(based on the searches I did through the net I assume that he is a black mini rex bunny) and we put him in a proper large case. What I would like to ask you is what do you think should I feed the new bunny now that it is the first days in my house? My lionhead bunny is eatting plenty of timothy hay, 2-3 cups of vegetables per day, carrot or fruit 2-3 times a week and quality pellets that are timothy based. She is also free around the house under my supervision and she only gets into her cage if I am away from the house and when I go to sleep. Would it be proper to feed from the first day exactly the same things we feed to our lionhead bunny? Could anyone of your give me some more information about this certain bunny if he/she knows more about the mini rex bunnies? Thank you in advance for all of your answers. XXX

You can feed the new bunny plenty of hay and give him pellets. Is this a young bunny, under 6 months of age? If so, he can have alfalfa hay or alfalfa based pellets. It would also be fine for him to eat the timothy hay. Diet is not so much dependent on breeds of rabbits, but it goes more by the age of rabbits. You would want to hold off on the veggies and fruits unless the rabbit is 3 months old or older. When you do start him on veggies and greens, go very slowly. Just try one new veggie every few days or every week. You don’t want to overload his system with unfamiliar foods. That could cause GI problems.

Thank you very much for your immediate reply. I will of course follow your advice. I gave him pellets and timothy hay and he ate both of them. He looked very hungry. From the time I brought him into our house he didn’t poop but he made some pee. Also I have seen that he sneezes a lot. His nose is clean and he doesn’t show any symptoms of illness. Do you believe should I worry about those two symptoms?

He is around 1 year old based on what they told me in the pet shop.

Since he is 1 year old, you can start giving him some greens. Maybe romaine lettuce would be a good one to start with, if they have that where you live. Otherwise, you could try one of the veggies you currently give to your other rabbit. The amount of pellets that you give him should be based on his weight. I just looked up mini rex rabbits and it says that they weigh between 3.5 and 4.5 pounds, so they are small rabbits and should get between 1/8 cup and 1/4 cup of pellets a day. Of course, they need unlimited hay.

The sneezing could be due to allergies since you don’t see any nasal discharge, but it’s also possible that he has an upper respiratory problem. It’s too bad that the rabbit savvy vet is not available. If the sneezing continues, you may need to take him to any vet that is available. Any vet can listen to his lungs and check him over.

You didn’t say if your female is spayed or not, but if she isn’t, be sure that you don’t let the bunnies get together for even a second, or you might end up with a litter. If you plan to bond them, they will have to be spayed and neutered first, then you let a few weeks pass after surgery before attempting to bond them. You should keep the new bunny apart from your female anyway, since it’s possible that he could have some sort of a respiratory infection.
