Hey everyone new here and have a few questions. Last Sunday we went out and got our first Flemish giant after a few months of looking for one. They said he was about 9 weeks old when we picked him up. I got him pellets (Fortis diet as they were the only one we found with high enough fiber) but he hasn’t touched them. Was wondering if it’s he just doesn’t like them or maybe something else. He has been eating his hay like no tomorrow (A Timothy brand) but not the pellets. Also I was wondering when I could start giving him greens. I’ve read all over to wait 10 weeks and others say two weeks after they start eating hay so was hoping for some clarification on when I should start. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there, I have a conti but I’m sure they’re similar with their huge appetites Is your bun struggling to eat the pellets, are they quite large? It might be worth trying other brands to see which one he prefers? Good luck with your new bun

He just doesn’t seem interested in them. Will go over smell then back to eating the hay. I think a trip to the feed store might be in order and I’ll just grab a few brands for him to try.

Have you tried hand feeding the pellets to him? If he will eat from your fingers, maybe he would think he’s getting a treat and start eating them, then continue to eat them from the bowl. Trying some different brands might work too. I assume you will be trying alfalfa based pellets, meant for juvenile rabbits.

Most articles say to wait until a rabbit is 12 weeks old before starting greens. Start slowly and try one new one every few days or once a week, to see what he likes and to eliminate any that might not agree with his GI system.

Here are 2 good articles on veggies and fruits:

It’s great that he’s eating a lot of hay!

I tried feeding him the pellets we have now by hand and he’s snubbed them. So made a trip to the feed store and they were nice enough to give me sample bags of six different pellets. He snubbed the 4 alfalfa mixes but ate both of the Timothy mixes.
