        Hey all,

So I have done tons of research and know very well that rabbits should not have food taken away from them ever. However, when I called my vet for Mosby’s neuter (who is very knowledgeable and has performed tons of rabbit spays and neuters) she asked me to take away food the night before the procedure. I am wondering if perhaps anyone else has had a vet suggest this? I am now somewhat scared to let her do the procedure even though she is my most trusted vet. Thoughts on this?

personally I wouldn’t use a vet that asked me to fast one of my rabbits, any vet that’s rabbit savvy would know that this is in fact very dangerous for rabbits and totally unnecessary as rabbits physically cannot vomit which is the only reason other animals, and humans are asked to fast for most procedures. I would honestly look for another vet but I know how hard that can be in some countries, I am so thankful to be in the UK where rabbits are seen by vets routinely

From my knowledge Rabbits are never to be starved before being neutered! Buns have very sensitive digestive systems and need to be grazing all the time to keep their guts moving.
I am of course not trying to undermine the vet but I would personally consider finding a different vet with more knowledge on rabbits!!

Trust your gut in this one

Very bad not to feed the bun: anesthesia slows down their guts, so pre-slowing them by not giving the bun food is really not a good idea.

If you trust this vet, you could ask her to explain her reasoning. You can say that you’ve heard and read that rabbits never should fast before surgery, (they have a very narrow passage between the esophagus and the stomach so they can’t vomit, same as horses).

If she can’t give you a satisfactory explanation or seems unduly annoyed by your asking, I’d choose another vet.

Most vets want food removed 30 mins to 1 hour before surgery so the bun doesn’t have food in the mouth or esophagus, but since most vets want you to check your bun in early in the morning so they can do the procedure when it suits them best during the day, they as a rule ask you to send food with your bun.

This sounds a bit mysterious to me :/

Sorry but they’re obviously not very knowledgeable about rabbits if they advise you to fast him.

I would not let her neuter Mosby. There are bun vets, then there are bun vets that regularly perform spays/neuters. It sounds like your vet is the former. A bun vet that does not perform neuters is not per se a lesser vet than one that does perform neuters. In fact, Luna’s vet doesn’t perform spays, but she did refer me to the vet who performed Luna’s spay (and he did a phenomenal job if I may say so ). However, as Bam noted, it is perplexing that your vet would instruct Mosby not eat prior to the surgery, regardless of whether or not she regularly performs neuters.

The vet herself said this or whoever you spoke with on the phone?

I definitely wouldn’t fast my rabbit before surgery. They need to always have they’re gut moving.

I second Jersey. Did the vet say this or was it the receptionist? Sometimes the receptionist doesn’t know and then just rattles off the cat/dog instructions. It happened with my vet.

Thanks for your replies everyone! I appreciate it! I knew that he wasn’t supposed to fast ever and it made me uncomfortable that she asked that. I have a few other vets that can do the procedure and I will be interviewing them with a bunch of questions before hand! It was the actual vet that I spoke to on the phone and she gave me those instructions. I also thought it was very interesting that she asked me to do that. Thanks for your help! I appreciate it. Deep down I knew the answer, but I wanted to double check with everyone on here because I know everyone has different experiences.
