        Hey all,

My Bella (or BellaBun, as I call him), is my beautiful senior Rex. He’s 9, blind in both eyes, and a total sweetheart. He spends most of his time sleeping, or eating, or cuddling with me (but mostly the first two, as those are his favourite pastimes!)

Over the years he’s been a fairly quiet bun, making more noises as he got older. He purrs when we cuddle and thumps when he wants my attention, but that’s always been it for the most part. Slowly over the past couple of years I’ve noticed new sounds in him. They occur when he is cleaning himself, and sometimes when he is sleeping. I’ve listened to different rabbit sounds on Youtube and the google soundboard, and the closest sound I can compare it to is honking, but a bit higher pitched.

When he’s cleaning himself he makes very cute honky-squeaky noises that end as soon as he’s done bathing.
When he’s sleeping, I often wonder if he’s stuffed up because the sound will get louder and louder and then it stops. Almost like somebody sniffling and sniffling to clear a blocked nasal passage, and then having it clear suddenly. (Except in this case, it isn’t a ‘sniffling’ sound, it’s a honking sound). Other times it will just be the occasional little ‘honk’ as he sleeps or is relaxing.

I have read around online and from what I’ve read it looks like he could just be snoring and enjoying his bathtime! But is it possible for a bun to be noisier when they become seniors? He’s always been such a quiet guy…

Anyway. I would love any thoughts if any one has any to share!

Also, just FYI –  nothing has changed in his living environment (other than that it is winter and drier here), nor in his diet. He is also intact and lives with no other rabbits.

        Thanks all!

I have a female Rex who also makes those noises. I thought she was ill but vet says she is fine.

I also had a very senior rabbit a few years ago who snored so loudly he often woke himself up!

Perhaps it’s simply a sign of aging?
