Hi everyone, I have a question for all you experienced bunny owners! My Mochi is 8 months old, and for the past several months the right side of his nose/cheek is often very wet. It comes and goes (some days it’s totally dry, other days it’s so wet that it runs down my finger when I touch it).
The consistency of the drainage is very thin and watery, so at first I assumed it was actually water. Mochi uses a water bottle and I figured he was just making a mess
But after I started paying attention, I noticed that sometimes it would appear even after he’d been out of his cage for an hour or two without drinking.
After I did some research, I wondered if maybe the wetness was drool from some kind of dental problem. I ended up bringing him to the vet, who checked Mochi’s teeth and said they were just fine. He confirmed for me that the drainage was actually coming from his nose, and looked at a sample under the microscope and found some cocci bacteria. He sent me home with a prescription for Baytril, which I syringe-fed Mochi for about 2 weeks till it ran out. (Poor thing! He haaaaated the taste…
)
Anyway, the antibiotics didn’t seem to make any difference
I talked to the vet again, who said that since Mochi isn’t having any other symptoms, there’s no reason to pursue treating it further. They said that if he started sneezing or if the drainage became thick or colored, I should bring him back in.
Has anyone experienced this before? Watery, clear nasal drainage, only on one side. No other symptoms. It doesn’t seem to bother him at all.
I had a hard time finding a picture where you can see the wetness, but I found this one from back in November (it does get wetter than this sometimes):
