Ava has a poopy butt that needs cleaning. She’s gotten better about being picked up, but especially anything out of the ordinary (such as a butt cleaning) will make her flail. The problem with a bunny burrito is it doesn’t leave the butt exposed. I’m going to have my dad hold her while I use a wet rag, but how do we keep her from wiggling without a burrito?

When i use the butrito to trim nails on my extra feisty bunny, i either leave a flap for me to pull diwn as i fold the towel over her butt, or i just roll her up like a tube. A tube might work for u? So her feet are wrapped but her butt is accessible?

I just got it over with, my dad dipped her in a shallow pool of water and I used a wash cloth to clean. I do have a gross question about what I saw though. Actually after doing some research, I think I figured it out. She did have a little bit of poop stuck, which I saw and cleaned, but when I was cleaning her butt, I noticed these hard dried things on either side. When I cleaned them out, there was almost skunky smell. Which now doing some research, I think was some buildup from her scent glands.

How often should I check her scent glands?

So that is how I clean Lancelots but. I wasn’t sure how you felt about getting her feet wet. I fill the sink with 2 inches of warm soapy water. I put a facecloth in the sink for grip for his feet, and a cloth draped over the edge for his paws. I let him soak his butt for 5 minutes. (Those are the instructions on the chlorhexidine shampoo I use). He doesn’t wriggle and is pretty good about it. After the butt bath, I lie him in hsi side on my lap, and use a cotton swab to clean those skunky glands. I find that a weekly cleaning is sufficient. Normally bunnies keep them clean by themselves. May I ask what gave your bunny her poopy butt? Lancelot has nerve damage from EC, and I suspect arthritis to, so he can’t reach his scent glands. I clean them every weekend. If I find they are dirtier than usuel, I’ll clean twice a week, but once weems to work fine. I use a cotton bud with warm soapy water. I’ve read to use vaseline, but I haven’t tried it. the warm soapy water works just fine. If I were you, I would check them a few times a week, untill I can establish a suitable time frame. For example, if you chek check 3 times a week and they are only plugged up once, then you can check once a week.

Occasionally Ava gets softer poops. Not diarrhea, but a bit squishy. She had one of the softer poops stuck to her butt fur. I’ve talked to her vet about it in the past and he said it was likely caused from her ingesting too much fur. I’m trying to brush her more and she gets a little bit of canned pumpkin on a schedule, more often when she’s shedding.

Some bunnies keep their own scent glands clean enough. Some need routine cleaning. You can check them once a month as part of your maintenance routine.
