pipin has gi stasis. hes occasionally eating now and he’s been drinking, so thats good. But he’s not pooping. I’m wondering if its okay to give him metamucil? And i checked all of my local pet stores for critical care, but none of our pet stores carry it. Is there a pellet mush recipe I can give him?

you can mix regular pellets with water or juice and feed it to him like critical care.

can you bring him to a vet check up? the vets usually carry critical care as well.

If pipin has true stasis, he will need a vet asap to get a gut motility drug, sub-q fluids, and an anti-inflammatory like metacam, all of which will help move his gut along again. However, until then, push the leafy greens if he does okay with them when he is well, and hay. Anything you can do to get more water into his system to break up anything in his tummy that might be getting dehydrated will help. You can also try baby gas medicine to try to get rid of any potential gas bubbles in the system. Bunnies cannot easily overdose on infant gas meds like simethicone, and I have found them to be very valuable in helping get rid of gas for bunnies that are sort of eating still, but look uncomfortable and might not be pooping normally. Critical care is great for a rabbit on the mend from stasis, but until he sees a vet, it might not help much. If he’ll eat mushed up pellets, you can also try those, but I probably wouldn’t force feed anything until a vet x-rays his gut and can identify what is going on.

If he isn’t pooping, he needs a vet. Critical care is for when they’re not eating on their own, not for when they’re not pooping.

thank you so much! I didn’t take him to a vet, but i gave him 4 medications, and he made it! He’s eating, drinking, pooping, peeing, etc. I’m so happy!

So glad to hear he is doing better! These bunnies like to keep us on our toes with their GI systems sometimes…

Curious – what did you give him? Glad he is doing better. I wouldn’t use metamucil on a bunny. I’d consider getting him some probiotics.

I gave him a 4th of a baby aspirin, Zantac, Baby Gas relief drops, and benebac
