I’ve had Bella for about a month. When I brought her home I bought the kaytee alfalfa hay and she picked through it but didn’t really like it. I just switched her over to the oxbow alfalfa and I can’t even keep it in her hay feeder longer than a few hours before it needs to be refilled. I also bought the kaytee gravity food holder but I think it’s too small. Which hay feeder do you all recommend that holds more hay? I also just switched her from the rabbit recycled paper litter to to the cat recycled paper litter but the cat version I’m not a big fan of. It’s non clumping but it’s just different. Which litter do you recommend? TIA

For hay racks, I think most people use products that aren’t sold as hay racks, since hay racks from pet stores tend to be much too small. I use a shower caddy basket for my hay, others use the ikea plastic bag holder or under shelf storage baskets, and some people just put hay in one section of the litter tray.

As for litter, I’m not a fan of paper pellet litters. I use a wood pellet litter. You can get it at pet stores, but they’re also sold as wood stove pellets at places like Home Depot, or you can also go to a fodder store and they sell them as horse stall pellets. The only thing to consider is with the wood stove pellets to make sure that they don’t have any added accelerants.

I agree with Azerane. But I also put hay in a cardboard box. Great for digging.

I remember trying kaytee hay once. We ran out of hay and I didn’t have time to go across town to the petsmart. So I bought that stuff and my boys wouldn’t touch it. I don’t think it’s as fresh/ good of quality.

I like hay from small pets select. I use coconut husk litter by catspot and I made my hay rack so it could sit over her litter box. I copied some I seen online. Mine does not look as nice, but gets the job done!

If you search on YouTube, there are some good DIY hayrack ideas with videos to show you how. I made one with a plastic box, about the size of a large shoe box. It fastens on the outside of the buns’ ex pen, and the hay comes through the bars for them.

Regarding litter, I also use wood pellets, with a Binky Bunny litter box screen (the best gadget ever).

I buy hay from my local feed store. They sell orchard hay in a bag, about a quarter bale for $8. My buns go nuts for it, unlike pet store hay. I also like Small Pet Select orchard.

We used to use hay feeders until two of my bunnies had eye injuries from sticking their faces in and being scratched by hay. Now I swear by a pile of hay in the litterbox (love the litterbox screens from the Binky Bunny store and they save a ton of money on litter). As far as litter goes, we use aspen pelleted litter with a layer of paper type litter on top of it — my girls don’t like their potties to make noise so the paper litter quiets the wood pellets!
